Bronya's latest 10.9.2 RC5/RC6/RC6_fix kernels do allow to update/install 10.9.2 and 10.9.3, but I'm experiencing trouble with graphics acceleration with my nVidia cards (GeForce 9800GT and/or GeForce GT610). That's an issue I was not experiencing with previous Mavericks versions or previous OS X releases, so it's work in progress...

Thank you!

Following axmanA's research, graphics issues encountered since 10.9.2 are now sorted. The Precision 670 with GeForce 9800GT can now run 10.9.2/10.9.3/10.9.4 with Bronya's 10.9.2 RC5/RC6/RC6 fix/RC7 kernel with full (non-lagging) QE/CI if kexts IOPCIFamily + AppleACPIPlatform are replaced by versions from 10.9.1 or IOPCIFamily patched version from axmanA is used (I sticked to 1st option).

All running well, but there are small graphics defects like picture corruption when doing screen dumps, but that has been reported by other AMD kernel users too, so it's not specific to the Dell Precision 670 system. Other than that, everything looks perfect so far.  :thumbsup_anim:

Reverting to those 10.9.1 kexts also restores the ability to boot Mavericks on the Precision 670 off a USB external HDD. This was also lost from 10.9.2...

Was running RC7, but experienced out the odd sudden system freeze when starting Skype. Reverted to RC6_fix (for old CPUs) and the freeze does not happen, so sticking to that. Need to recheck Sleep & Wake though...

RC5 gives me occasional small graphics artefacts, so I dismissed that one.

RC6 and RC6_fix run Ok, but I cannot get screen to wake after sleep. Screen stays off for some reason.

RC7 runs Ok and properly wakes system from sleep.

Up to 10.9.5 now. This new update proved a bit problematic at the onset (it would not boot to OS X desktop) and subsequently required rolling back IOHIDFamily kext from 10.9.4 (v2.0.0 - 503.200.2) to complete startup. A better alternative is to rollback IOHIDFamily + Sandbox + System kexts from 10.9.1 as that also avoids all kernel symbols related error messages during startup and subsequent system problems.

Naturally, I kept the rollback to 10.9.1's AppleACPIPlatform + IOPCIFamily kexts to retain 9800GT graphics support.

Can run using same AMD kernels from Bronya, namely 10.9.2 RC7 (old) + 10.9.4 RC1/RC2 or BSA 10.9.5 kernel.

Since the old girl won't die...

Now running Yosemite with Bronya's 10.10 RC2.1 AMD kernel + axmanA's modded IOPCIFamily kext to retain full QE/CI and avoid white/gray screen on GeForce 9800GT (using MacPro3,1 SMBIOS profile).

Use attached /Extra package for Chameleon (r2401 works perfectly) and attached config.plist with Clover:

it's early days for Yosemite with AMD kernels, so installation is far from bug-free.

Updated to 10.10.1. All seems Ok, except the known graphics problems.

A few points on graphics glitches experienced on this system with the GeForce 9800GT:

  • even though Bronya's 10.10 RC2.1 sorts out corruption of desktop icons, it causes very buggy behaviour of Safari
  • use attached patched IOGraphicsFamily kext to avoid final boot screen graphics corruption

In all cases, rebuild cache before reboot:
sudo chmod -R 755 /S/L/E
sudo chown -R 0:0 /S/L/E
sudo touch /S/L/E
sudo kextcache -Boot -U /

Updated to 10.10.2 using Bronya's rc7 kernel which worked perfectly in 10.10 as it removed all outstanding graphics glitches. Again, axmanA's patched IOPCIFamily kext had to be used to avoid white screen at desktop initialisation and reach Yosemite desktop.

System running pretty well under this latest 10.10.2 update, even got the nVidia driver to update (1st to v343.02.02f02, then to v343.02.02f03 after the Security Update 2015-002)... I've also done away with NullCPUPowerManagement and all is Ok so far. Sleep & Wake working well.

NB: the kernel replacement + cache rebuild process must be renewed after Apple Security Update 2015-002 is installed as it reinstates the vanilla kernel.

And up to 10.10.3 still under Bronya's 14.0.0 RC7 kernel. I had to use ToraChiYo's pthread kext or system would KP at boot time. Also used his IOPCIFamily kext but AxmanA's Yosemite version will work just the same for my GeForce 9800 card. System runs Ok but does feel a little laggy though...

Salut Hervé pourrait tu m'expliquer pourquoi tu a eu besoin de mettre un kernel modifier pour ce PC ?

The old NetBurst-based Irwindale and Paxville Xeon DP CPUs appeared unsupported by vanilla kernels so I can only get OS X going with AMD kernels! Same would apply to Nocona CPUs.

It's not entirely a surprise, no Apple Macs ever got fitted with those CPUs... The 1st ever MacPro1,1 had Core-based Xeon (dual-core WoodCrest or quad-core Clovertown).

So I am lucky with my

Intel Xeon E5335

core Clovertown   :D

Well, that particular Core-based Xeon generation does not apply to the old Precision 670 so you're talking about a different system.

Yes I am talking about the Dell Precision 690  :)
