Battery and sound issues with an Acer 4820TG

Hi everyone,

I 've finally been able to install SL on my TimelineX 4820TG (core i3 and ATI HD 5470).

I managed to make almost everything working (lan, wifi, gpu, touchpad...).

But I'm not able to see the battery level (always telling that I don't have any battery) and no sound with the built-in soundcard. I've got a loud pink noise with VoodooHDA, that I can turn off if I mute the microphone, but nothing else.

It works with an usb sound system...

Does someone have an idea to resolve these 2 problems ?

I used iBoot2 and then ##### on SL 10.6.7

Thank you very much ;)

Hi bro.

I have the same laptop and last 5 days I've spend trying to make it run in perfect way (btw I also got 100% working destop hackintosh).

I did not use ##### as you did. I only installed SL retail 10.6.3 with ##### 2.7 then delta updates up to 10.6.7.

My gfx card is detected as HD 5000, correct resolution 1366*768 (i think without full acceleration, but a way better than 1024*768). I can see screensavers, timemachine ui, but can NOT see "water effect" when adding widget to desktop. Also, my task bar is not transparent.

Can you see this effect with your ##### (and i suggest you used ati driver updates from last ##### vers) ?

How you managed to make Wifi card work? I use external wifi card now - DLink DWA 125 and Ralink Wireless Utility.

I tryed to install voodoo-hda 0.2.62(nothing at all), 2.7.1(KP) and 2.7.2(just noise; it disappears with Fn+F8).

Also I've found this post. It seems I need to install AtiSupport.kext from Lion and set AtiConfig boot option to Hoolock, but I did not tried this still. To be honest I need correct resolution more than QE/CI.

UPD : i also installed smbios for MBP8,1 from MiltiBeast 3.4.0

One more thing - any success with battery indicator ?

So, please answer me about wifi and keep me informed about the results of your progress. I will do the same and together we must win the battle.

One more thing, I also faced with the problem that my USB work nice, but iphone and ipad are not recognized. I installed 10.6.0 usb drivers and now they are recognized, but USB are recognized only when plugged before laptop boot. So what about USB on your laptop ?

And one more thing :D What external sound system you use ? Can you give me a link to it and link to drivers ?

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

I'm sorry I don't think I will be able to help you a lot. In fact my wifi worked out of the box.

But I can describe what I did, maybe will it help you or anyone who tried to make the 4820 working (hardly found anyone who could so I tried alone).

I didn't play with any .kext, as I had to do with my older Toshiba laptop.

I set the bios in that way, to start : AHCI enabled, and Switchable GPU on.

Then, I use the ##### CD, to launch the OSX 10.6.3 retail DVD. I boot with this command :"-x PCIRootUID=1"

I install OSX, then I boot again with #####, and -x PCIRootUID=1.

Then, after having repaired permissions, I upgrade with 10.6.7 combo update, then, without rebooting, I install #####. I check this :

-#####

-Disk (everything)

-System Utilities (everything)

-FakeSMC

-FakeSMC Plugins

-Null cpupowermanagement

-Voodoo PS/2 Controller

-Voodoo PS/2 Trackpad

-Voodoo HDA (the last one, for the soundboard)

-ATI Driver 1.6.32.12

-Chameleon Instant

After this installation, remove appleintelcpupowermanagement.kext, and restart.

While it's rebooting, I go in the bios, and I enable Discrete gpu.

This time, OSX will boot with ok display trackpad, and wifi.

I don't have any ripple effect neither.

For the sound, I bought a little MuseXL external soundcard. I plug the usb cord in and it works out of the box with VoodooHDA driver.

I don't tried so much things with usb, but this sound device, my usb thumb and external HD work very well. I can't tell for ipod or iphone I don't like Apple products :)

I hope it helped a little bit, as I haven't been able to test deeply SL cause I try to "quad-boot" the PC (SL, Win7, XP, Linux), but it's not as easy as it used to be with Leopard on my older laptop.

If I manage to make all of this working in an easy way, I can make a deeper tutorial if some people want it ?

Thanks for your reply. Do you know (I think you can figure out it if you have windows installed) what audio chipset our laptop have ? This can help. I googled but did not found anything except "Intel High Definition Audio". Is it Realtek chipset ? - if you google for windows drivers you will find out that audio drivers for it are from Realtek. Now it is very important to figure this out.

Good question. I had to format the hard drive, I'm actually installing OSX again. I'll install Win7 and I'll tell you which card it is. I give up with xp as I have an error at setup, whatever I try.

Any progress ?

It seems installing smbios for MBP 8, it can make gfx work(as I described) with 10.6.7 with it's own drivers. I forgot to mention that.

I checked the drivers DVD. It seems it's a Realteck soundchip. I'll install this driver in osx this afternoon, and see if it works.

You can have the gfx working ? But can we switch between the two gpu or still have only one working ?

Thanks

Hi. It seems to be Realtek alc269 or alc269q soundchip. I am trying to find drivers for it, but have no success. Try you too.

On my laptop no swithces are possible, only discrete card. It is a must. It has full QE/CI support (opengl extension viewer correctly detects the model, extensions, etc) but it has problems with framebuffer. That is why we do not see ripple effect.

So we have to work on this 2 directions.

How you managed to make Wifi card work? I use external wifi card now - DLink DWA 125 and Ralink Wireless Utility.

Seems that acer uses several cards for 4820TG :

My first 4820TG i3/hd5470 :

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002a] (rev 01)

My second 4820TG i5/hd6550 :

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43225 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4357] (rev 01)

The second is it the one usable under OSX ?

AFAIK there are broadcom kext that work. Also, as I understaned, he managed to make Atheros card work with #####. Just read this topic more carefully. If you will do it too please post your steps here :(

But I'm not able to see the battery level (always telling that I don't have any battery) and no sound with the built-in soundcard. I've got a loud pink noise with VoodooHDA, that I can turn off if I mute the microphone, but nothing else.
I've encountered the exact same problems as yours on Battery and Sound and I have to replace VoodooBattery with AppleACPIBatteryManager to get the Battery Icon and meter reading correctly. For the sound, a patched version of VoodooHDA need to be replaced in order to get it works with Realtek ALC269.

You can read my full story and download the kexts from my post here . Please also test the mentioned problem in my post see if you also having the same in your system, thanks!

After this installation, remove appleintelcpupowermanagement.kext, and restart.
Any reason behind need to remove this?

Hi,

i'd like to add a few notes about my finding :

- First, if you don't remove "appleintelcpupowermanagement.kext" and do not install the "Null cpupowermanagement" kext, you'll have SpeedStep working.

- To get the build in ethernet card to work, you can install "AtherosL1cEthernet.kext" from kexts.com (Chipset AR8151).

- To get the ATI HD 5650 to work you can follow this thread : http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=250905

I would like a full tutorial on how to get OSX fully working on my 4820TG, I have a fully working core i5 OSX Desktop (-SLEEP mode).

Does this laptop with OSX have sleep issues?

Also how is the battery life with OSX on the 4820TG?

Thanks,

Thanks for this guide. I used it successfully to install SL 10.6.7 on my 3820TG (basically the same as the 4820TG but with a 13" screen and ATi 5470 Mobility GPU).

I was wondering if anyone has successfully got QE/CI working yet? I found this thread that uses the ATi kexts from Lion which natively supports ATi 5000 GPU's. The injector works from the Extra folder and there's no need for GPU BIOS dumps.

I'm going to give it a try tonight.

Hello all,

I've been trying the tonymacx86's ##### + ##### method for quite a while and more or less have come to experience a somewhat repeatable error.

I can get 10.6.3 installed fine. If I were to restart and boot through #####, I can get back in and even surf the net over wifi with safari and multi-touch trackpad. Just stuck with 1024x768 and no sound.

Problem starts after I do the "run ##### - install 10.6.7 combo - install ##### - restart" thing.

I've followed Nevralgeek's guide as much as I could except for null cpupowermanagement and removing appleintelcpupowermanagement.kext as I couldn't find it and that many others in the forum said that its removal isn't a good idea.

I could get to chameleon without ##### with no issues.

After booting with busratio=17 PCIRootUID=1 -x -v , I can see that I can get past chameleon just fine.

Once I get to the DSMOS has arrived message, I will get the appleintelcpupowermanagement time out error and a whole bunch of "unsupported chips" messages which I found out had to do with CPU monitoring.

Where might I have gone wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Hi All,

I've got the 4820T and i'm having a little trouble with SL installation. I can successfully install 10.6 with fully working wlan, ethernet keyboard and mouse but the display is stuck at 1024x768.

My problem is i keep getting stuck when i try to install the 10.6.7 combo update. I've also tried the 10.6.5 and 10.6.2.

I was wondering if anyone could give me a pointer as to how to avoid the "You need to restart your computer......" nonsense and upgrade to 10.6.7.

My method (following Nevralgeek's method) I boot with #####, install 10.6, restart, fix permissions then attempt to install the combo update.

Everything but the following works (on 10.6.0)

- Full Resolution of display

- Battery (not even recognised)

- Sound (sound control appears but is not affective)

I'd also like to say a big thanks to Nevralgeek for the guide provided. ;)

EDIT: Just succeeded in updating to 10.6.2 from a fresh 10.6 :) (nearly there) ##### didn't take effect (stuck in boot loop) display, battery and sound are still not working. Kinda pointless really.

Hi everyone,

I own an Acer 3820tg with Core i3 and ATI 5650m

My Atheros Wi-fi card has been swapped out for an Intel Centrino Advanced 6200 agn wireless card and as a result, I have not been able to get it working.

Nevertheless, I have scoured these forums to try to get the most out of my system. From my understanding, the Acer 3820tg and 4820tg are relatively similar systems (besides the 14" screen and exclusion of an optical drive) so maybe my findings will provide some help.

What doesn't work:

 • Webcam (Detected but black screen)
 • Microphone
 • Intel Centrino 6200 agn Wi-Fi
 • Proper keyboard (Mine is European and I can't type Tilda)
 • Sleep (Freezes in all ACPI sleep states)

I currently have:

full display resolution (EDID override)

Resolution options will not be available in System Preferences until QE/CI is enabled

If you're already using SL kexts to get GraphicsEnabler=Yes working, you can still set the resolution by adding the boot option: "Graphics Mode"="1366x768x32"

I followed this guide: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php...p;mode=threaded

ATI 5650 mobility hardware acceleration with QE/CI

using Lion Kexts:

 • ATI5000Controller.kext
 • ATIFramebuffer.kext
 • ATISupport.kext

http://www.mediafire.com/?1eb2x1v1nuk4i6d (From comments section of Netkas' blog)

as well as 10.6.8 ATI kexts and bundles:

 • ATIRadeonX3000.kext
 • ATIRadeonX3000GA.plugin
 • ATIRadeonX3000GLDriver.bundle
 • ATIRadeonX3000VADriver.bundle

(Just stuff from 10.6.8 ComboUpdate)

and a modified kabyl boot file

Attachment from this post: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=250905

As according to the above linked topic, I am using the following boot options:

GraphicsEnabler=Yes
AtiConfig=Eulemur
UseAtiROM=Yes

(Eulemur is the framebuffer for 5650, supposedly its Hoolock for 5470)

working trackpad and keyboard (VoodooPS2)

working audio output w/ white noise (modded VoodooHDA)

battery indicator (VoodooBattery)

working Ethernet port (AtherosL1cEthernet.kext)

VoodooPS2.kext from #####, modded VoodooHDA from a LifeHacker guide (in the post-install zip), the rest from Kexts.com

------------------------------

My installation methodology was a bit unconventional because I have no optical drive (used 2 USB keys) but if anybody is interested, I can make a post...
