FKA
Curious about experiences using FCP for HD editing on a hack? What specs are your machines? oddly enough I am and I've built a few for friends who are editors/ film makers. They chug along nicely but you can't beat the MacPro systems we use at work - even then an AVID system would be far superior. A freind has now edited 2, 30min 720p documentries on his system which has very similar specs to my sig'. I've not recommended a similar build to you as I personaly think you need more grunt if you want a serious editing machine. I should have asked already - is this machine for professional use? I'd assumed so! D

I'd assumed so! D actually, I'm just learning but plan to use for commercial purposes as I go. Starting out most projects would be few and far in between. Budget wise, I assume I would be choosing between a used duo core mac pro vs an i7 hack or possibly i7 imac? (If budget wasn't a huge issue I would definitely go mac pro all the way). from what i read, hacks can kick some butt on a tight budget, but I'm afraid of stability issues and constant maintenance compared to an actual mac. But saying that you don't have to update once you have a stable system! 10.6.3 update for example D

If you are just starting out with the editing thing then I would go for the hack. You can add to your system as you get more into it and it will cost a whole lot less. However you've got to be up for the challenge! If you want an easy life go for a real Mac. Personally I think you would out grow an iMac quite quickly. You'll be lucky if you can find someone to build and install a hack for you - and anyway you'd be so much better off if you built it yourself. This way you will have a greater understanding of how it works. Stable a hack can be, however you can break it yourself a whole lot easier than a regular PC or Mac. You've got to decide what you can live with mate D

I'm still torn, I don't have the expertise or patience to build and tweek a hack myself and I/m too poor for a decent mac pro. I did find a place online that will build a hack and a place that will convert an existing pc. I also have a friend who is pc tech saavy but never did an actual hack before. I think these avenues are probably best as a $1,500 used mac pro will be pretty outdated. thanks again.
