Hello

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.3 running. All works fine. With your help i could my NVidia 8400GS 256VRAM to work.

I have a screen resolution of 1920x1080.

How can i make sure quartz gl is working too?

I tried osx86tools to enable but i get an error. "Apple script error Cant make "the domain/default pair of(com.apple.windowserver, quartzglenabled) does not exist" into type booleean. (-1700)

So any chance to get this last pice up and running?

This is a common misunderstanding. Quartz GL is enabled by default and used by apps that are programmed to use it. The tickbox in OSX86Tools forces it on for everything, which is not always a good idea especially if you're using older software.

Quartz GL is obviously related to Quartz Extreme/Core Image, but ticking that checkbox will not enable hardware accelerated graphics.

If your menu bar is transparent and you see a water ripple effect when adding new widgets in dashboard, then QE/CI is working. Snow Leopard does not show QE/CI information in System Profiler, presumably because all Macs that can run Snow Leopard have video cards that are QE/CI capable.

If you want to know more, read the wikipedia article about Quartz.

Firstly, I'd recommend that keeping the Quartz Extreme on default mode= that is "OFF".

Coz, recently I found out that my Geekbench was crashing since I upgraded from 10.6.0. till 10.6.3.

All of them incremental updates. That was the only App used to crash when I used to launch it. Nothing else!

Not even GarageBand, and other video editing apps that I use. Even Yahoo Messenger.

So well... keep it off. The performance gain is nothing! It is like Windows refresh.

Though, everybody knows, Mac OS X does not need anything like forced refreshing or manually refreshing the video buffers. It does it automatically, faster and sooner than Windows.

Now,

Simple Run Chess game in Snow Leopard.

Or you can even try Xbench. Geekbench.

Or better yet try the third-party freeware benchmarking utilities like:

opencl_aobench

OpenCL_Qjulia_GPU OpenCL_Qjulia_GPU.zip

OpenCL_Transpose__Bandwidh OpenCL_Transpose__Bandwidh.zip

qJulia1024

Galaxies_32K_V2

Galaxies_8K_V2

I've attached the smaller files.

Feel free to ask for the other large files (11MB) if you really need to test and confirm.

I don't understand why there are so many posts on 'is QE/CI working', and why there are so many complicated methods of determining whether it is working or not.

As Beerkex't says the simplest way to tell is if you have a transparent menu bar. (or ripple when added gadget, or spacey graphics in TM, or Chess working.)

Couldn't be easier!

So chess would not work (run?) if QE/CI is "disabled"?

Just curious as I couldn't get QE/CI work for my GFX card using netkas 10.6.3 exotic patch + EVOEnabler.kext for 4830 (results a glitch screen). I went back and used netkas 10.6.2 patch instead and all I got was screen resolution adjustment without QE/CI enhancements :( No ripples but I haven't test chess yet (I know but I kinda wished I could at least play some chess while working for a solution right?)

Open Word 2008 for Mac

If your system automatically restarts with no message, then its enabled.

Well, I can't confirm that method. Coz My QuartzGL was enabled and I have used word a zillion times everyday.

Nothing like that ever happened! Hmmm...

On the other hand, I disabled Quartz Extreme and now Word can't open more than 1 file at a time. :pirate2:

M1cr05hit products! :ninja:

Anyways, as the dilemma goes... I'd first tried the Chess game in Tiger and then in Leopard.

Both times initially, it loaded even though my card (then 5700 and 5200, two different PCs) weren't supported.

Till few months down the line.

Chess did load but was quite slow. I mean realllllll Sloooooooooowwwwwwww.

Sucked all the CPU Power just to get it running and even to quit it took a long while.

So, you see...

However, the simplest is of course the ripples in the Dashboard whenever you adda widget. That's the quickest way to determine if QE/CI is enabled or not.

Or even one can run OpenLG Extensions Viewer and run the built-in benchmarking option.
