Wireless card won't initialize on boot without -f. WHY?

I have an Asus WL-138g V2 wireless card. I bought it because of its reported compatibility.

After a week of troubleshooting, I figured out that the only way to get the card to work was that upon booting, I had to use a -f flag and then manually tell the card to connect to my prefered wireless network once in the operating system. (I forget what article I found that said try -f, but I did it as a last effort, and was elated when it worked).

Why won't it automatically do these steps? Especially when it's reported to work out of the box?
