Macbook stalls on grey startup screen

I have macbook running OS X 10.4.11

While installing a safari and security update last night my I encountered an error installing the security update, as well as an error installing an unrelated program at the same time and eventually froze. So I held down the power button to turn it off. When I restarted the computer stalled indefinitely on the grey startup screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel.

What I've tried:

Zapped PRAM

Tried to boot in Safe mode but it still stalled on the grey screen

Booted from install disk. Ran Disk utility and no errors or problems were encountered.

When I startup in Verbose mode the last few lines before it stalls are:

CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe: -v

CSRHIDTransitionDriver::start before command

CSRHIDTransitionDriver::stop

BluetoothHCIController::start Idle Timer Stopped

When I startup in Single User mode (Command S) I get the following text and am unable to enter anything

CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe: -s

CSRHIDTransitionDriver::probe booting in single user .. do not match

I've read the postings in the apple discussion page regarding this problem but none of the answers so far help.

Thanks.

Do you have a good backup? ;)

You may want to archive or erase and install Mac OS X on your HDD. Sounds like you won't be booting from it very soon. Have you tried recovering your data using the OS X DVD's Terminal?

  • 2 months later...

hey there..

not to revive this dead thread, but i have the exact same problem .. installed the recent security update on my macbook pro running tiger and now it does get past the grey screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel.. switching to verbose mode reveals that it halts as well at "BlootoothHCIController>>Start Idle Timer Stopped"

has this been resolved in any way? ..

trying to repait the disk and disk permissions, it repairs the disk successfully but comes up with the same mesages when trying to repair permisions

"Group differs on ./Private, should be 80, group is 0"

"Permissions differ on ./Private should be drwxrwxr-x, they are drwxr-xr-x"

"Group differs on ./private, should be 0, group is 80"

"Permissions differ on ./Private should be drwxr-xr-x, they are drwxrwxr-x"

although it says it has repaired the permissions the same messages pop up if you run it again.. (i noticed how apparently ./Private and ./private are switched in their permissions ?)

any suggestions in this one?
