I'm trying out a few ASUS Passive Cooled ATI cards and thought I'd share the experience as I go through this.

Mind you, I'm no expert in this area. Any advice is appreciated.

Base Test System:

ASUS P5K-E WiFi (BIOS 1012)

E6850 Intel Core Duo 3.0Ghz

Patriot 2x2GB DDR2 1066 5-5-5-15 (50 trfc)

Fujitsu 160GB 7200 2.5" SATA

Samsung SH203S SATA DVD

Samsung 940BW 19" 1440x900 (DVI Connected unless otherwise noted)

Here are links to the cards on Newegg.com

They have better pics of the cards than I.

ASUS EAH2400PRO/HTP/256M Radeon HD 2400 PRO 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 PCI Express x16

ASUS EAH3650 SILENT MAGIC/HTDP/512M Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16

ASUS EAH3650 SILENT/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16

The main difference between the two 3650 cards here is the GDDR2 vs GDDR3 memory and memory clocking.

I suspect the Device ID's are going to be the same as well.

The Grey Heatsink on the ASUS EAH3650 SILENT MAGIC is better suited for a "tight fit" as it is the same size as the card where the GDDR3 black heatsink model sticks out about 1cm above and 2.5cm behind the card.

I'll start off with a Kalyway 10.5.2 install using the built in NATIT_For_X2000_X3000_Series and white_menus_fixe_HD3850_3870x2 drivers as a starting point.

ASUS EAH2400PRO

Needed to use the analog VGA port on this card.

On the DVI port, the system would display during boot up until the desktop should be displayed.

Monitor winked out at that point with a loss of signal.

Booting on the analog port got things going, but resolution is wrong causing pretty ugly rendering.

Fixed that in System Preferences->Displays and set it to 1440x900.

I was able to wake from sleep correctly and get the display back (Repost Video on S3 Resume Disabled in BIOS).

It's being detected as a 2400XT instead of a 2400Pro but my understanding is that the GPU Clock and memory used is the only thing that differs and shouldn't be an issue.

ASUS EAH3650 SILENT MAGIC GDDR2

System Boots and auto detected the Samsung LCD at 1440x900@60hz on either DVI Port.

Resume from S3 (wakeup from sleep) wouldn't restore the video.

Setting "Repost Video on S3 Resume" option in BIOS to enable (disabled by default) didn't help.

Upon resuming, I would get a 1/4 panel of the desktop displayed in the upper left corner flashing between grey and the desktop.

As suspected, the Device ID's are the same and so are the issues.

I'll just refer to them as "ASUS EAH3650 SILENT" from here on.

Now I'll see if I can follow what netkas has indicated here:

ASUS EAH2400PRO

The advice from the following thread worked for this ASUS ATI HD2400 Pro.

(I got my) ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro fully working in 10.5.2

Modifying the Info.plist with the 0x94c31002 entry got CI/QE working.

Works with either the natit February release and those included on the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD.

The remaining problem for this HD2400 Pro is that only the analog vga out will work.

Looks like there might be a solution for this... trying a few more things out.

ASUS EAH3650 SILENT

The same trick of adding the device id for the 3650 didn't work out.

Booting will eventually get you the "You need to restart your computer" error.

I'm trying out the apple drivers that netkas mentions.

Be sure to post back your results with the 3650. I have the Asus EAH3650 (non-silent, dev id 9598) and haven't been able to get those 3650 kexts working yet (and I'm not the only one). If you do, let us know how you did it.

I have the same Asus Passive cooled HD3650 with 9598 as Dev_id.

At this moment i'm trying to solve other issues i have with my new htpc, but i'm going to see if i can make this graphic card work with OsX in the next days.

Netkas wrote:

"no pkg

only kexts for 3650, install 10.5.2 then latest natit then those kexts."

Did you tried exactly this way?!

Anywhere alse i can find those kext?! I can't use IRC...

I wasn't able to continue with these cards until a couple of days ago.

I worked with the ever helpful lastExile via IRC to try a few things out.

The lastExile package does indeed work well for these 3650 Cards, but I couldn't tell for sure if the GPU was throttling correctly.

Based on the heat being generated it didn't "feel" like it.

For me, the card was just getting too darn hot compared to when "idle" with the WinXP drivers.

With the lack of GPU Clock and Temperature sensor reading in OSX, I can't say for sure unless I get a temp probe on the heatsink or one of those fancy thermal/infrared temperature gadgets (neither of which I have at my disposal at the moment).

note: I tried hardwaremonitor and iStat, but they couldn't read the card sensors.

If you know of another util to use, let me know.

HD2400Pro - I tried endlessly to get DVI out of the 2400Pro with no luck.

This involved starting out with natit + Apple Update + traikas driver which was reported to work on some other cards, but broke with this one.

I can't be really helpful since i don't have any temperature reading under OsX, but this is what i found:

Under Vista, the 3650 temperature is 49-52 °C in idle (Catalyst Control Center).

When i reboot to Vista, after a session in OsX, CCC shows that the temperature is around 67 °C and gradually lowers back to 63 °C, 58°C and so on getting back to normal values.

It seems to me that the throttling isn't correct but even with the temp @ 70°C i wouldn't be much worried about that as long as it doesn't reach something like 85°C. I only have two fans in my system at the moment a PWM Schynthe fan on the cpu (12cm usually at 400-500rpm) and a 10db Papst fan on modded psu so i'll be probably adding a very low rpm 12cm fan on the side panel of my case (at the same level of the grapphic card) just to assure some air intake and prevent damages.

I have almost the exact same system, with the ATi EAH3650 Silent

Resume from S3 (wakeup from sleep) wouldn't restore the video.

Setting "Repost Video on S3 Resume" option in BIOS to enable (disabled by default) didn't help.

Upon resuming, I would get a 1/4 panel of the desktop displayed in the upper left corner flashing between grey and the desktop.

And this is exactly what happens to me.

Has anyone figured out a fix for this yet?

Cheers!
