Whats the best way to install ATI HD4890 QE/CI if possible?

The title says everything, can u tell me what ways i have to make it work. My PC is this one:

Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-DS3

Processor: Intel Q9400 @ 2.66 Ghz

RAM: 4x2 gb Patriot Gaming @ 1066 Mhz

Graphics: Sapphire Radeon HD4890 1GB GDDR5

Network: Realtek 8111C

Audio: ALC889a

Here's what I did for my HIS HD4890:

1. Upgrade to 10.5.7. Do this while your old card is still installed.

2. Uninstall natit, if present. It shouldn't be there unless you installed it.

3. Disable QuartzGL, if enabled. It's off by default, so unless you explicitly turned it on, you can skip this.

4. Remove your graphics card EFI string from com.apple.boot.plist, if you put it there.

5. Install QE_CI_Exotic_cards.pkg (found on the 48x0 threads).

6. Install the new enabler from netkas.

http://rapidshare.de/files/47335568/Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg.html

7. Shut the computer down an install your new card.

NOTE: Only one (1) DVI monitor can be plugged in at a time, or it will not boot all the way. It will instead stop at a blue screen with no mouse.

8. Boot the computer. You should have QE/CI now.

You can try the instructions on the 48x0 thread, but they're incomplete for the 4890, and were made prior to the new enabler by netkas.

If you don't have an old video card anymore, you can try the steps in the following order:

1. Remove any additional monitors.

2. Install QE_CI_Exotic_cards.pkg.

3. Install Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg.

4. Uninstall natit.

5. Disable QuartzGL.

6. Upgrade to 10.5.7.

7. Reboot.

It may work, (I haven't tested it) since some people have said that the kexts didn't take effect until they'd upgraded to 10.5.7. I think that the card will boot in VESA/VBE mode without the kexts installed, but I haven't tried it.

Thanks, I'll try but i dont have an old video card so I'll try the 2nd method. If I installed iDeneb 10.5.6. What's the best way to upgrade to 10.5.7?.

Hi Aenin,

I got it working a bit differently, but thank you so much for your instructions!

I already had my machine updated to 10.5.7.

I did 2, then 3, and then used the Ati_Init.pkg (available here ). I then reboot, and when back had QE supported.

  • I wonder how should I have uninstalled natit? (I don't know how to do it, that's why I didn't do it)
  • Why should I have uninstalled natit?

Running on a GA-EX58-UD5 with d.d retail install.

Thanks again!

There are better instructions than I could provide running around for upgrading to 10.5.7 all over the place. Searching for that can help. In short, I used appledecrypt and appleintelcpupm disabler kexts and then installed the 10.5.7 update normally.

Once again, uninstalling Natit is only necessary if you installed it in the first place and if you followed the steps outlined above. The ATI_Init package is an earlier version of Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_cards.pkg, which has ATI_Init and Natit integrated into the same package. That's why we remove the old Natit, because we've got a new package that includes it. If you'd like to know what Natit does, you could always try searching for it.

(Sorry, the lmgtfy link was irresistable. :) There's a wiki link (about the 7th result) that talks about what Natit is.)

I can't help you if you did things a different way, and I'm not about to downgrade a package on my system to see the results. You'd get more relevant results in the thread of whatever instructions you followed. The point of these instructions was to show how things fit together with the latest versions of the various kernel extensions. But if it's working well enough for you and you can change your screen resolution and everything, then leave well enough alone.

I just got the ATi 4890 1GB yesterday. Waiting for any detail of how to make 4890 work with OSx. Right now i'm still using 10.5.6 Looking forward to heard the news from your guy.

[facepalm] Instructions were posted already, that's the point. Your recent (and only other) posts show that you got it working elsewhere anyway, so I'll leave this one alone.

Just confirming that the following worked for me:

1) Run QE_CI_Exotic_Cards.pkg - This installs a load of kexts to the system/library/extensions folder.

2) Run Enabler_for_Nvidia_and_multiple_ATI_Cards.pkg

3) Reboot

All automated, thanks to all the great minds making this community work.
