Hi, this is my first, but probably not my last, post on this forum, so bear with me please. :)

I've been through two installs so far and can't quite seem to get a handle on this problem, so I was hoping you could help me. I'll start from the beginning.

Let me start by saying I've obtained KALYWAY's 10.4.10 Intel SSE3 install DVD, and have installed it to my flash drive. The installation went well, I formatted my drive (It's a 4GB lexar firefly) Mac OSX Extended (No journaling... I'm not in the habit of trashing flash drives!), and selected MBR boot options. I went through the installation options and tailored the 3rd party drivers included with the install to my computer. (Pretty much just isntalled the ATI x1x00 drivers which, from what it stated and it's name, I assumed would work for my x1400)

My computer booted from the drive easily, especially since I had a flash drive previously with a linux install on it, which worked fine (well, it booted at least).

I tried just a straight boot to begin, got the gray screen with the apple logo, everything went fine. However, when that screen went away it was quickly replaced by alternating black and white vertical lines. This hurt my head quite a bit, but I decided to leave it and see if it was just part of the boot process and something I might have to live with. It did go away, but only to be replaced by a black screen like my computer screen had actually gone out (I could still see the back lighting though). This screen did not go away.

Ok, so no big deal. I restarted booted with the -v flag. Everything seemed to be going fine (it even detected my WiFi card with no 3rd party drivers - it's a bcm4311 chipset).

This is where it starts to get difficult for me because I'm not exactly sure what all this means. The computer stated something about waiting for application services multiple times, then stated that diskarb failed. It kept waiting for the application services (I know this because it kept saying it) and retryed the diskarb several times. Eventually it gave up on the diskarb, however, it kept waiting for some application services, and then the black and white vertical lines were back.

I restarted again, and after some searching on this forum decided to try the -x flag. I guess this is boot in VGA mode?

This produced the exact same results. I even tried disabling dual core support in my bios, but that only made things worse.

So, I got my install dvd out, reformatted my USB drive, and reinstalled. This time I was not going to be picky at all, and just installed all the drivers that were included in the DVD. I tried just a normal boot, and this produced something a little better, it went straight to the black screen, with no black and white lines. YAY! :P Anyways, so I tried again booting from the new install with -x flags. This actually produced the black screen, and I even saw something flicker on the screen for a moment. It was so fast I couldn't make out what it was. I decided to let this sit for a bit, thinking maybe it was again part of the boot process. But again, it just sat on the black screen for a long time and didn't do anything.

So this is where I come to you. Any ideas? From what I've seen and read around here, I think my computer is pretty well supported by OSX, with the exception of my gfx card. I'm seriously considering this might be the issue, at which point I've thought about reinstalling one more time - without any drivers - but before I did this I wanted to see if maybe I had just missed something. I'd really appreciate a response, and would be willing to work through any steps outlined(assuming they were clearly provided). If this issue has been brought up and fixed before, I couldn't find it, and simply directing me to the thread would probably solve my problem. Also, if you need more info about my system, please let me know, I'll get it for you.

Thanks.

P.S. I'm wondering if also it might be better to just get another install of OSX (I was thinking JaS 10.4.8) - I'd really like a leopard install, but they won't fit on my 4gig USB drive(I've tried two different installs so far KALWAY 10.5.1 & Leo4All 10.5.2)

first things first, I would like to know what your specs are so i can see if it is a contributing problem to the black and stripes on the screen. If anything try and see if there is a driver that fits your gfx card. It should available on any tiger distro. If that does not work then get a new graphics card. Another thingcould be is that there might be some resolutions that are not supported by the graphics card. I see it a lot in Linux. I can't remember how to fix it but it was some weird resolution. Anyways, check your install DVD nad give it a shot. If that does not work then get a good cheap gfx card. I would personally recommend nvidia. No offence to ATI or anything.

Let me know if it helps

There's no such thing as a cheap, easy gfx card because this is a laptop. As far as I know, the gfx cards aren't quite as plug and play as on the desktops. I would if I could though.

So I've just installed JaS 10.4.8 and I've encountered the same problem. The black and white vertical lines after the gray screen with the black apple, and then the black screen. I think it must be a gfx card issue, but I'm still unsure. I don't know much about OSX. Does anyone please have any other suggestions? I installed all the drivers, etc for my hardware. I'm almost lost as for what to do anymore! Please help! I think my next try will be without any drivers. Maybe I can get something.
