It may not be using a good refresh rate. See if you can open the System Preferences (off the Apple menu top left) and click Monitors. See if you can choose another refresh frequency, a lower color setting... If it lets you change nothing about the monitor, it actually is just using a VESA driver, which means for some reason the ATI chipset was not initialized right... some issue with the driver, kext, Info.plist file... something few (if any) of us know how to repair.
