need help mac mini to lcd tv funky resolution problem

hey all-

i just purchased a mac mini (g4) with the ati chip and i'm encountering a problem in that, everytime i try to switch to 1024x768 (it's a 32" lcd; ilo) something happens and i see up in the corner of my tv 1280x768 and then i get a blank screen of course because my tv will only go up to 1024. i'm using a dvi cable to the back of a dvi input on the tv. i have a pc with an nvidia 7300gt that works no problem. am i missing something here or is this just something funky to to with the graphics chip in this particular mini?
