I have been fooling with this very thing for about a week now. Doing this is not quite what it seems, it is not easy, knowing about PCs and Windoze won't help you.

First: what you have

* Motherboard manufacturer's name: ASUS P4GV-LA

* HP Compaq name: Guppy-GL6E / Govii / 5188-0911

CPU/Processor

* Socket: 478

* Supports Intel Pentium4 processor

Front-side bus (FSB)

* 533/400 MHz

Chipset

* Northbridge: Intel 845GV Graphics and Memory Controller Hub (GMCH)

* Southbridge: Intel ICH4

Memory

* 2 x 184-pin DDR DIMM sockets support unbuffered non-ECC 2 GB 333/266 MHz DDR SDRAM memory modules

Expansion slots

* Three PCI

* No AGP slot

Video graphics

* Integrated

Onboard audio or audio card Controller: AC-97

*

Realtek ALC650/658 6-channel CODEC chipset

Onboard LAN

* Realtek RTL8100C

* 10/100 Mbps LAN controller

This is an "older" 845 chipset board WITHOUT an AGP slot.

Now I know a fair bit about PCs, but NOTHING about Macs.

Pick a distro of OSx86. I feel a "new guy" (being one myself) should have the best luck with this one: XxX 10.4.10, because it has fairly detailed instructions included and seems to have the best selection of drivers "out of the box" (but NO printer drivers). That Pirate place by the Bay should be helpful.

Now, in that distro you will find audio drivers and Lan drivers. What is going to give you trouble is the video drivers for your integrated video, I don't *think* video drivers exist for the old 845 chipset (I couldn't find any anywhere), and you don't have an AGP slot, so the easiest solution is a PCI video card from ATI. or Nvidia.

So, yes it should go, but I *think* you will need to buy a video card.

Wow right on, I recently just switched over to OS X and if you use your pc to watch movies or do a little bit more graphics intensive processing I do recommend going to future shop or the source and get one of there clearence PCs, Only because the PCI graphics card is going to cost you an arm and a leg not saying that OSX wont work , for playing with im sure your PC will be fine but in my experience that will be slow.

PCI graphics cards are not too terribly expensive, a Radeon 7500, or a FX5200, can be had rather cheaply, I'm not sure how a Celeron is going to work vs. a P4, but it should be ok.

I'm using a P4 @1.5ghz and it's ok, not a speed demon, but "usable". Myself, I'm just "exploring".

Let us know how you make out!

I'm a bit slower than XP, but not a "lot" slower, it's really hard to compare because of the difference.

(of course a P4@1.5 and a SDRAM board is a "dog" no matter the OS, it was "free", pulled from a dumpster)

It depends on your install, the closer you get to "perfect", the faster it is going to work.
