Audio related issues.

I have an Intel HDA sound card in my laptop, (made by realtek). It was detected out of box, and works rather well out of the laptop speakers, when I plug in external speakers i don't get any output. Any ideas? Also I don't have any shortcut keys to turn the volume up and down, i have to your the task are volume control, any way to turn that on?
