Built-in camera as iSight?

After much futzing about with Natit.kext, I finally have Leopard running on my Thinkpad R61i. After running Apple's update to get to 10.5.1, graphics and both cores now work. Slowly I get this machine functioning. Thank you to everyone here who's written software to let me get it this far!

 

When I went through the New User setup, I was very surprised when I got to the step where one chooses a picture, only to have the built-in camera turn on and take a picture of me. No extra drivers were installed, other than Natit, it Just Worked.

 

Now, when I launch a program such as iChat or Photobooth, the green light next to the camera turns on, indicating it's running. Unfortunately, neither program actually displays a picture. However, if I go to System Preferences and attempt to snap a new picture of myself using the camera, it functions just fine.

 

It would seem as though these two programs access the camera differently. Does anyone have any idea why one program would be able to reliably use the camera, while others would reliably not?

I've come up with a workaround, and I'm baffled as to why it works.

 

1) Open up Terminal.app and Photo Booth

2) Run /Applications/System\ Preferences/Contents/MacOS/System\ Preferences

3) Go to Accounts

4) Click on your user icon, go to "Edit".

5) Click the button to take a video shot

6) While the countdown is happening, go to Terminal and press Control+Z to suspend System Preferences

 

Photo Booth will now be working.

 

The only reason I can fathom for why this would work is if System Preferences is initializing the camera in some way different than anything else. Unfortunately, ktrace seems to be missing in Leopard. Is dtrace the new ktrace, or is there another way to figure out just what's going on?
