Hi all,

After a fair amount of trawling forums etc looking for info, I'm prepared to give Leopard a go on my little 12" G4 867 Powerbook (120 Gb HDD, 1.2 Gb RAM). Now that I have a Mac Pro, the Powerbook is primarily going to be used for portable audio recording... I may also occasionally use iTunes or play movies out to my TV.

I will either be running Logic Pro 7 or 8, depending on which version I can squeeze the most performance out of.

I have done a clean install of 10.5. At this stage I could quite happily do another installation if need be.

As the above is all I plan to use this machine for, I am trying to find out more information with regard to optimising performance under Leopard. I'm not sure how much of an improvement I'm going to see, but from my research so far my current plan is:

~ Turn off Finder animations (hopefully the tips here still work in Leopard - http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?sto...50705155727856)

~ Set the Dock to 2D mode using "defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES; killall Dock" or maybe DockDR.

~ Disable Spotlight (not sure if this will help much??)

~ Disable Dashboard.

~ Use "XSlimmer" to remove unneeded optimisations.

~ Use "AppZapper" to remove unneeded apps and components.

~ Use "Monolingual" to remove unneeded localisation files etc.

~ Use "Renicer" and give greater priority to Logic Pro when it is running.

~ Disable font smoothing (not sure if this will provide a performance benefit??)

I'd appreciate if anyone can provide methods for the following:

~ Disable window shadows (a la Shadow Killer - it's not yet Leopard compatible).

~ Disable transparent menus and menu bar (but only if it would result in a performance increase).

I know that generally people say that there isn't really much you can do to "tune" or "tweak" OS X to get more performance, but if anyone does have tips or tricks, or details of non-essential services that I can disable etc, anything really that could help me squeeze the most I can out of this setup I would be most grateful! Remember that this machine is going to be primarily for audio, so I don't want to tweak anything that could have an adverse affect on audio applications.

Many many thanks in advance - if I can get this sorted over the holidays season I'll be stoked!

BTW, I'm glad that in my search for info I found InsanelyMac - this place looks like a great resource!! Especially now that I'm considering experimenting with OSX86 for my next machine :P

Monolingual can do the same thing as Xslimmer. AppTrap is free and far better than AppZapper, all you have to do is move an Application to the trash and a convenient dialogue box comes up asking if you would like to move related files into the trash.
