Newb: removing kexts from busted pc ON the busted pc?

Ok - I'm trying to install on an HP Compac TC 1100. I've already installed properly using a usb dvd drive. But now upon boot into the harddrive with osx installed, it just freezes at something regarding the language packs.

 

I suspect some of the kexts are messed up and stalling the bootup; but I can't even boot the thing into the installable dvd anymore.

 

I'm stuck.

 

Is there a way, upon f8 and 'boot:' is flashing, that I can actually ...well, do something else? I just don't get it.

 

And worse still, there's only one drive listed with the boot question - the hard drive the installation is on, not the dvd drive at all.

 

Any thoughts?
