fallout9
hardware: -intel core2duo e6750 2,66; -dg33tlm; -geforce 6600 128mb; -2gb ram; -320gb hdd western digital, sata; -lg dvd, ide. i managed to install mac os x under vmware on my system, but i can't get a native installation. still receive the 'waiting for root device' message. tried all combinations, with the dvd on master, then slave, cable select, jas, uphuck, 10.4.8, 10.4.9... all wasted time. i don't want to put an ide hdd on my system, so the last chance, i guess, is to purchase a sata dvd, but i don't know for sure if this is gona work. i read somwhere that if you unplug the sata dvd when 'waiting for root device' message appears and then plug it again it could work. could be true or it's just another bedtime story? libtech
1. Try waiting a little longer maybe? That happened to me the first time (when i didn't get the right settings in vmware). Like seriously i waited for 5-10 minutes and then it went on to the installation screen. 2. I'm running a SATA and i got further than you did (but i guess that depends on the mobo/setup), try just using a mounted image with daemon tools instead of through the dvd drive. good luck to ya. GAIAStevef
Your milage may vary, but when I first attempet installing I kept getting the same error and was able to work around it this way; 1. My DVD drive is IDE, slave device on IDE1 2. I took my SATA drive and made it the master drive on IDE1 using one of those SATA->IDE converter things that plug in between the drive cable and the drive. 3. Booted off of uphuck's 10.4.9 v1.3 disc (I wanted the mail & sync utilities, else I'd use 1.4i) 4. It took about 3-4 minutes to go through the various startup stuff to get to the "Choose language" option, during which I did see several "waiting for root device" entries mixed in with all the other lines that go by during a verbose boot, but it didn't hang the boot on any of them. 5. For the install select options, I chose the 10.4.9 system files, the universal #3 kernel, the SATA options, the 10.4.4 login window, the ATI driver for my card (natit x13xx) and teh azalea audio drivers. 6. After installation was finished, I rebooted, and the system came up just fine runnign on teh IDE drive. Since the SATA kext was chosen during install, it saw my other SATA drive just fine. 7. I shut the system down, and moved the drive to the SATA cable, rebooted, and was quite surprised that the system came up just fine, (probable due to having loaded the SATA kexts previously)... I had really expected it to complain that the drive was on a different device chain, but it didn't. The only real glitch I had was that my on-board NIC was not recognized OOTB (an Intel Proo/100 VE, but I was able to work around that to fix it from the instructions on this post' [HowTo] Fix Network Problem with Intel PRO/100 VE My system specs; HP MediaCenter PC m7467c Asus P5LP-LE 3.2GZ, i945P, ICH7R Raeltek ALC882D CPU: D940 SSE3 2GB DDR2 800Mhz FSB ATI Radeon x1300 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/62292-vmware-worked-native-install-didnt-why/#findComment-441312 Share on other sites

fallout9
libtech> 1. i waited more than one hour and the status was the same - 'still waiting for root device'. 2. i used a mounted image when i installed os x under vmware, but now i try to make a native install, i can't use daemon tools with this. gaiastevef> i didn't know that such a device exists. i'll try to find one in local stores. codermonkey> i've tried that allready. set the sata as ide, legacy, native, all settings and combinations possible. it won't work. thanks everybody for tryin' to help and i'm still open to alternative solutions. ion
Somebody told me, i should add ICH9R support to a kext file by device id. I haven't tried it yet but i started to install via vmware to another physical drive but don't have time Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/62292-vmware-worked-native-install-didnt-why/#findComment-442885 Share on other sites
fallout9
finally!!! it worked! i give up on uphuck 1.4i and give credit to 10.4.8 from jas. the infamous 'still waiting for root device' dissapear. technically, i put the ide dvd with the convertor from dvd to sata on sata port 2, the sata hdd on hdd1 and the installation worked great. the onboard lan (intel 82566dc) isn't working, but i managed to get online installing an old and cheap admtech in pci slot, it uses the tulip drivers found on this forum.
