Hi,

I am very new to the OSx86 project and I was wondering if my laptop would be compatible. If it is compatible, I will be inwtalling OSX using Uphuck r1.4i. (I also posted this same exact post on Uphuck's Forums).

I used Belarc to extract the following specs:

Model: TOSHIBA Satellite A105 PSAA5U-01300Q

Main Circuit Board: ATI SB450 Rev0.4b

Processor: 1.60 gigahertz Intel Celeron M 420

Hard-drive: 60gb

Display/Graphics Card: ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series [Display adapter]

Audio: Realtek High Definition Audio

Bus Adapters: ENE CB-1410/851 Cardbus Controller

Other Devices:

VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

Microsoft AC Adapter

Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery

Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad [Mouse]

Toshiba Logical Tbios Device

Toshiba Mobile PC Driver

USB Root Hub (3x)

At present, I am dual-booting WinXP SP2 and Kubuntu. I was wondering the following: If I do install OSx86, will I be able to install Windows with Bootcamp? same goes for Linux? I only need windows to run the one game I play - the only thing that's keeping me back from switching completely do a different operating system.

Thanks in advance - I really appreciate. If more system specs are needed, please ask.

First,

Here is the link to the Wiki. There you can try to find out if your system will be compatible. Just scroll down the page and click the Portable Computers link next to the words "10.4.8 Hardware Compatibility List". I suggest you put the Wiki main page in your Bookmarks/Favorites folder.

Second,

Boot Camp does not work on x86 PCs, it does on Intel Macs, but not x86 PC. Your solution would just be to Triple Boot you computer with your current Windows OS, your current Kubuntu, and your soon to be installed Mac OSx86. There are plenty of guides telling you how to do this on the Wiki page, just click on the link "Installation Guides" and find the one that meets your needs.

Third,

I do not really think any x86 computer is 100% compatiable with OS X (if they were this forum would sort of be a waste of time), some have gotten damn close, but not 100% right out of the box. Please do not let this discourage you though. For example, you will probably have to patch your audio, lan, and video to get it working.

Fourth,

Just try, whats the worst that can happen. It doesn't work, and you have to reformat the space of the disk (which by the way if you run Kubuntu, it should be a walk in the park to do.).

Well Good Luck and it is always good to see a new fellow macKER'

Cody, thanks for your response!

The only reason I worry is that I use my laptop for school and for work - college starts up on Tuesday and I'm moving in tomorrow. My original intent was to install Osx86 and use boot camp to instlal everything else on top of that. What I think I'm going to do now is back everything up, create a partition and follow wiki.

Thanks for your response.

If you are starting school soon, (I just did too, its a bummer to go back) I would do one of three things. Because I know how bad it sucks to not have a laptop in class.

1.) Buy an extra hard drive. That would be the absolute fool proof way not to mess up your system. If it works then try to install it on your original hard drive.

2.) By an external mini hard drive or install on an iPod. This would make your OS X hard drive portable via USB and can fit in your pocket, without screwing up your Windows and Kubuntu partitions.

3.) Do what you are doing, completely back up everything and cross your fingers. I do not personally recommend, because something can always go wrong, and I am a big believer in Murphy's Law.

But anyways, Good Luck

Well, I got my answer, it's a big NO.

Infnity RS482/ATI SB450

IDE Seems to have problems during installation proccess after finishing a install. Unknown working status as follows... Realtek ALC850, Northbridge ATI Radeon Xpress 200 and SATA does not work. NIC onboard Realtek RTL8110SB Gigabit onboard works.

Will not work without patching, and no patching info is listed. Sadness :D

Maybe I'll have better luck with my desktop.

Thats usually what happens with lappies. I use my desktop for all of my extra computer activities as you can see by my sig. My lappy is strictly school use, and I do not want to eff it up.

First off, I'm also a firm believre in Murphy's Law :P

Second, My Dell Dimension 2400 Desktop has the same luck...so now I'm hoping that people will visit my website and start donating more money to my firefox extension so I can buy myself a Macbook Pro =p (www.lazyrussian.com :D ) lol.

I'm gonna rough it out with Kubuntu for another semester or so, maybe KDE4 will deliver on their Apple Widgets integration promise.

Just need to get Guild Wars and VNC working on Linux, and I'm gone from Windows Forever!

Anyway, way off course there. Thanks for your help - I've gotten my answers and I know where I stand with my chances of getting a Mac to work on my PC's at this point in time.

Have a great semester.
