Has anyone had any issues with the latest iTunes and Safari 3.0.3?

I had problems connecting to network shares so I figured a reboot would fix it, as it does sometimes. I see a thread related to that now, and that was the problem- the connect button does nothing and the aliases are always not there. Stupid Apple file sharing.

But ...

So, I decided to run Software Update to snag Safari 3.0.3 and iTunes 7.3.2, I think, whatever the current offering is as of today.

No issues, rebooted, got the panic dialog where I should have gotten login window.

Flicked the reset, same thing.

Did verbose safe boot, and it was repairing the volume structure.

It finished all that, boots all the way to the desktop.

Check disk permissions, fixes one thing.

Looked at the S.M.A.R.T. status, says 'VERIFIED'.

Restart normally- and panic dialog again.

Flick the reset and do verbose mode, it's repairing the disk again- minor repairs, kept going, switched graphics modes after loading Natit and now it's in black.

So.. did Software update sneak something in, anyone had a similar experience, or did this just happen at the same time for the heck of it?

The base install was Uphuck 1.2, Intel, Bad Axe 2 with E6600 and 512M 7950GS

We have the same motherboard, although I'm using uphuck 1.4r3. At one time I did have 1.2. I've downloaded all of apple's upgrades and not found anything hidden inside. Something else must be going on. As I mentioned in another post, all software still works.

Would seem to me like you also updated to 10.4.9 or 10.4.10 through software update. This is a BIG no-no. Never use software update to install combo updates of any kind. It is safe to use software update to install security patches and os x software updates, but never do the system software updates!

Nope, definately didn't update system software within that update. I actually, previously, set 10.4.10 to ignore and don't bother me again, on that update. I used Software Update extensively to do Apple Pro Applications, Safari, Quicktime and iLife '06, no issues. Just this one time, for two measly updates, Safari 3.0.3 and iTunes.

The fact that the system still boots in Safe Boot mode confirms lack of kernel changes. That would have just not worked.

Chasing through all what changed, by dates, the only things I find that changed are iTunes, QuickTime, Dashboard and Dock.app - caches and the com.Apple.sound settings.

Again, Safe Boot mode works just fine, just no sound and some other things not loaded.

Found the friggen problem ....

"DoubleCommand" -I installed that thing for some reason, I'm not sure. I'm using Apple keyboard/mouse on it. I think I did it to check it out for my MDD DPG4 that got kicked over to the KVM with the W-box.. and now I think I can do it with just the keyboard PrefPane anyway.

Midnight computing does not pay.

I installed that thing a few days ago, and had not rebooted since. ..and since forgot I installed it, too. Until I saw it in the StartupItems folder.

Only now- when Software Update required a reboot.. did I get stung.

...and found the problem after I forcibly ripped out iTunes and Safari.

Blech.
