Well, by now I think that my harddrive is pretty much just done, and I've given up on it for the time being, until I can purchase a new hard drive.

Does anyone know how you can fix a hard drive that is doing this?

I cannot even access the BIOS Settings or Boot Menu because if I hit the hotkeys for them displayed on the opening splash screen for the computer manufacturer, it still does not go past that screen.

Is there ANY WAY to fix my hard drive?

Thanks

Well - that certainly sounds like a dead HD... Nothing to do there. Don't have a spare laying around to try? Does the drive spin? Can you still boot into the install DVD?

For a flakey HD, there's always the old Freezer technique, but it usually only revives some forms of HD failure - that involves placing the HD in a baggie and sticking it in the freezer overnight, then hooking it up and seeing if it comes back to life.

Do you have a USB adapter or external case that you could try accessing the drive on your other computer?

Damn...

See, I'm just 14, so I don't really have any way of making money much, but I'm dogsitting right now and am making $100 from it on the 14th... I'm going to the beach in two weeks and was looking forward to having the money for that, but I guess I'm getting a new hard drive.

I don't have any spares...

I guess I'll try the freezer thing, see if that works.

I don't have a USB adapter or an external case...

But, I do have a friend that can pop it into his computer as a slave drive and check it out, see if it works and if he can format it.

We'll see... I'll wait a few days before freezing it, because if it's a functional hard drive that's just having a few issues, can that be bad for it? if not, I'll do it tonight.

Thanks for the help

Okay, unless your drive is making clicking noises or is humming, it's probably not broken. Here's what you need to do to get it back to Windows ready. Find a copy of fdisk. It's on most Windows install disks. Ideally, you want to put fdisk on a bootable floppy disk. If you don't already have this, make it on a friend's computer. Boot your computer with the floppy disk. Type fdisk and hit 'enter'. One of your options will be to delete the non-DOS partition. Choose that and delete that partition. You can then choose to delete all partitions and then repartition it as one big drive or to separate DOS partitions. You now have a disk that's okay for Windows or you can start all over again trying OSX. Your disk more than likely just has a corrupted hfs+ partition and the pc doesn't know what to do with it.

edit: p.s. Do not put the drive in the freezer

That was something that I had thought about doing, BJ, but I don't have a floppy disk drive on my computer.

If I get one that's USB powered or something-else-powered, could I plug it in and it'll work without my computer actually booting?

Because if so, I think I do have one lying around somewhere...

I'd have to ask my friend Jimmy to make an fdrive though... He probably already has one.

Thanks!

If you don't have a floppy drive and your bios is set to boot first from your optical drive (cd, dvd) you might want to try inserting your windows xp cd and using that to reformat the partition on your hard drive. It's not fdisk, but it just might work for you.

edit: not a quick format, but a full blown format
