Currently I am a Mac novice. I have used a Mac for random needs but nothing too hardcore. I have been going through getting my networking degree and now that I am close to completion I want to branch out more. I am looking to install Mac OS X Server on a home built machine. I know it is possible to install it on intel machine but I am looking for the specifics. Can any one give me advice or point me in the direction to make sure all my hardware will check out with the Mac OS? I was pointed in this direction and it really looks like yall are the folks that can help instead of telling me to just buy a Mac. All constructive advice would be appreciated.

First, read all of the stickies in the Tutorials section.

You need to get a copy of an OSx86 release (by JaS, uphuck, etc). Check your hardware against the compatibility lists on the wiki. To install Server, you need to get the extra packages from a Server installation. I believe some of them are actually available on the Apple website.

just know that it can be done... i just got my os x server up & running on a celeron d proc. i love my new mail server...

os x server 10.4.10 & zimbra mail server are so much better than the ms exchange 2003 box i had been running for my personal mail server. sadly, i can't walk away from exchange altogether, since i'm an exchange admin.
