We all know the Mac Pro's come with dual-socket dual-core Xeon processors. Has anyone tried actually running OS X on this type of hardware? I can get things like motherboards insanely cheap, but I think once we factor in ECC memory and the processors themselves, we'd probably exceed the price of a Mac Pro. But that's not the point. :)

Has anyone successfully run OS X on standard Intel server hardware?

Thanks!

ive been trying to get 10.4.6 and 10.4.8 (JaS) working on the Dell 1950, ofcourse the

big problem with these machines is the SAS drive connected to an LSI 1068 controller.

I was able to boot off the CD and partition an external SATA drive connected through

USB and get through most of the install (actually, I had to boot single user mode and

install the packages manually, but that seems to be a problem with the DVDr) but ..

when I try to boot off the external drive it tends to get stuck 'waiting for root filesystem'.

So I extended the internal SATA connector, and used this to attach the drive I installed

on .. same problem. I can boot single user mode from the dvd, then mount the sata

disk, chroot to the mounted disk but haven't gotten launchd up and running yet.

Neither the onboard broadcom neXtreme controller or the PCIe Intel gigabit controller

appears to work. I do have drivers for the PCIe 10 Gigabit Myricom card but haven't

had a chance to try them yet.

UPDATE!

I'm building an older Xeon hackintosh as we speak. I've installed JaS 10.4.8 but the system's display freezes on the gray Apple boot screen but I know the system is still working as there is HDD activity etc. I'm assuming the onboard ATI Rage XL is not supported, its detected as only being VESA 2.0 compliant.

Once I get a PCI video card I will try it again. Maybe a PCI slot FX5500 or x1300. (this mobo only has PCI-X slots)

I do know one thing, Vista Ultimate screams on this beast, sees the dual procs with hyper threading as a quad core system. I hope if I can get OS X working it will do the same!
