I have installed the 10.4.8 on my Compaq R3000z (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=1384&hl=compaq+r3000z), and tried many different things to get it running up to speed (no services running at 100%), however, everything I try only seems to kill it at boot. I tried running the nvidia drivers, macvidia, and the ones on the install DVD, but no luck with them at all. I can only get a res 0f 1024x768 on a 1280x800 display. Typing graphics mode does nothing, and the vesa 3.0 ?video only shows a max res of 1024x768. I tired the kernel updater (http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=33039&st=0) yesterday because it seems like an easy way out if all went wrong. That just gave me illegal kernel commands at boot (probably cause it is for sse3), so I rebooted, and type mach_kernel.old at boot and I got back into OSX...Now, here is the strange but good thing, OSX actually ran really fast. It did not take 30 seconds to load a web page in FireFox! Application opened instantly! So I ran the X Bench again, and the results say it all - the cpu went from 10.88 to 53.99, UI from 2.67 to 115.99, OGL from 4.88 to 29.05 and so on. As you can see, things really speeded up. So I deleted the new kernel, renamed the mach_kernel.old to mach_kernel and rebooted and I was back to turtle speed. I wa not happy, so I rebooted again, and tried one of the other kernel back ups it made - mach_kernel .1 to.4 - tried mach_kernel.1 and it ran fast again. So I ran it for the night and the bugger eventually crashed. I tried the mach_kernel.1 at boot again and now I can not get the fast speed back. I even duplicated what I did yesterday with installing another kernel, and no luck. Does anyone have any ideas on how or what I did, and can I do it again to get this guy running at speed, and set the res? Thanks! :-)

To get things up to speed, update the kernel which will not work, reboot with the -v -f, then at the illegal kernel errors, reboot it again, and at the prompt try and boot using your old kernels: "mach_kernel.old" (or .1-.4) adn the -v, then check the speed using x-bench. Sometimes I might have to reboot the thing 10 times, typing differnet kernels at the prompt till she runs at full speed. If I could get the resolution set right, then OSX on the R3000Z would really rock!
