When I try to install any new program, like Firefox for OS X, I unpackage it, run the .dmg file, and drag the Firefox icon to Applications. It makes a copy, but when I double-click the new icon, nothing launches. I dragged it to my dock, and when I double-click the icon there, it bounces a few times, but doesn't launch.

Am I doing something incorrectly?

hmm it seems like this is starting to spread, someone else is complaining about the same thing here. and i will tell you the same thing i told them.

we need some more information, what version of OS X tiger do you have? (e.g 10.4.6, 10.4.7, etc...)

what are your system specs, how much ram do you have, what kind of processor.

And if possible, tell us, if any, what error messages are presented to you when you try to run a program.

I have:

OS X 10.4.1

Intel Pentium 4 2.4 GHz

768 MB RAM

ATI Radeon 9550 256MB

SoundMax built-in audio (AC 97?)

ADMTek 983 Ethernet adapter

No error messages pop up. I just double-click the icon, and nothing launches. I tried viewing it from the Terminal, and the .app files appear to be there under /Applications.

Okay, so I'm noticing a trend in which applications run and don't run after installation.

Methods that don't work:

1. Drag-and-drop to /Applications of .dmg (examples: latest versions of Firefox or Thunderbird or Opera)

Methods that do work:

1. Drag-and-drop to /Applications of .dmg.gz (examples: Firefox 0.8/0.9, Thunderbird 0.x/1.0)

2. Installers (examples: Apple DVD Player, Microsoft Office 2004)

So drag-and-drop of .dmg's doesn't work. Does it have anything to do with my using OS X 10.4.1? I've Googled everywhere, and I can't find a working solution.
