Hey guys,

Although I'm still crying for all the lost year wasting with Windows I'm glad having a Macbook and using OSX. However, I had the idea to use my old PC as kind of fileserver (for itunes etc.) and made my way to install OSx86 on it. There are some minor things not working yet (e.g. CD device) but I'll try to do fix it by myself. But there is one thing I need your help after spending the whole sunday with it. Post Installation my network card wasn't working. Reading through this awesome board I assume that I installed the suitable driver. From my parallel Win 2003 HD I got the vendor and dev ID and recognized a Via Rhine II installed on board. After installing the kext package for Via I was able to choose built-in ethernet in network preferences. However, OSX tells me that the Networkcable is not pluged in. Of course the first thing I checked was the cable and its good since it works fine with win2k3 hd. I addition I recognized that it seems that the networkcard is also working with Realtek 8139 driver that came with the OSx86 image, but causing the same problem. All other drivers are not working. (having not option th choose buitl in ehter). So now its your turn to tell me what to do; is the driver really proper installed (at least its in the system preferences) or are there any other possibilities why the cable is not detected.

In addition I discovered that the system runs very very slow and seems stocking some time. How I can improve the performance ? And finally I kindly ask you the following. Since I got the latest OS version for my Macbook I would like to know if I can use it to update also the PC. Assuming that I successully get my CD device working is it possible to turn in my OS cd and update ? I would discover by myself but there are so many new staff I have to remember.

Thanks in advance for all the advices and guidance

drpain, can you post what install cd you used, computer specs etc?

You can't use a mac osx cd because it will not load. Our mac osx86 cd's are made to boot an work with bios, override tpm etc. MAC osx cd's are made to work with efi, tpm and so on.

there is a way you can update to 10.4.8 but I need to know processor type (i.e. sse3 amd) etc.

Welcome!

I used the tiger_image from deadmoo, the pc runs a intel p4 2.4ghz, 1GB ram. The mainboard comes from VIA having sound and ethernet (Rhine II)onboard. I recently read in a different post those ethercards won't run and its recommended to buy a realtek comp. card. Is this still valid or are there working driver available yet ?

Appreciate

p.s. my wife is getting a baby soon, so please post your answers soon otherwise i won't be able spend hours in front of the pc. ;-)

I would check here first to see if there is a driver for yours, you would know better than I if there is a fix for it because I don't have that lan card.

my recommendation for a faster install is to load the latest jas dvd version 10.4.8, it supports sse2 and has the latest kernel, it should make your computer much faster.

I could be wrong but I remember there being some type of VIA driver you can install while doing the Jas install, maybe it would be good to keep an eye out for that!

Yeah my wifes getting a baby soon aswell but I wont get to spend hours infront of the computer!! hehe

well that's my ;)

agree on the 4.8 update and already found a source to get it but not ready yet. (Hopefully I have a chance to install it tomorrow unless the Baby will be here. Got an appointment on FRiday). Anyway, will wait for the latest version and see what improvement will be with it.

Good luck for your wife.
