Hi people, I could use some of your help here. Im runing OSX (10.4.6/ 4.7/ beta9 semthex kernel) on a P4 2.6 (sse2), ASUS P4P800-VM mobo. The thing is that I've being trying to use some audio software (CUBASE SX, ABLETON LIVE) and I get extremly high load CPU. In cubase for expl. just one VSTi channel with a few insterts makes the performance meter go to the sky. With LIVE 5 is worst; It hardly can loop 2 samples at the same time (also the cpu meter is high, high, high) . Im using a M-AUDIO OMNISTUDIO USB... But it work in the same way with the ONBOARD audio. Im going to try an old LAYLA20 PCI, but Im afraid Im going to get the same result....

May this be related with the SSE3-to-SSE2 emulation?, I mean, If I build a DUAL-CORE sse3 machine, can I spect this kind of software to work properly? There is any 'tweaks' im missing?..... Or maybe a USB related problem?.

Any idea, suggestions?

Thanx

Edit: I guess the thing is if the apps are UB. Isnt it?

Edit 2: I Tryed LIVE 5 (UB version) and it works perfect (offcourse!).

Nevertheless my question still. Would I be able to run PPC audio applications with a SSE3 hackintosh (conroe/dualcore)?

I run a SSE2 intel too. You indeed have to get the latest updates from your software which is UB.

PPC apps on intel will not run smooth..and never will. PPC apps run in rosetta..which is a translator

from ppc to intel. to be short here : Get the UB of your apps. Forget about ppc..the performance will

be poor..and will stay poor.

Good luck !

elRey: You talk about intel apps..not ppc apps. That's why you dont have these problems.

And yes...ppc apps will be poor because of the rosetta translation. Only sollution to this is

to get the Universal Binary's of the applications you're using (if available).

Reason, Logic, Live etc already have Universal binary's..some other apps like Dreamweaver,

flash etc don't ..In that case you just have to wait me thinkz.

Good luck again ! :)

well, I'll miss cubase sx (crack) then. The only craked version is an old one, PPC off course. But Im thinking to use mostly osx+ableton live for playing live concerts (I tend to belive that osx would be more stable than windows). For tracking, mixing, etc I have to stick to windows (it work pretty good actually) 'cos theres no osx support for my pulsar pci card (and there will never be). Thou I would like to run a sequencer within osx too; ....since I can not really afford to buy any at the moment my choices are motu DP or logic express. I dont know whichone would do better....

Depends on what application works best for you.

I use Logic Express for a very long time. Since i had used it on windows it was no big step

for me to take. DP is nice too..but imho completely different. Although i think it would work

just as fine. Just try the apps..see what works best for you.

So far the UB apps are working good on my hackintosh; Live, logic express, guitar rig, reaktor, etc... Also the M-audio Omnistudio USB (last version drivers)...

The only problem is that I dont have graphics support (865G on my desktop, radeon IGP 7000 on my laptop). This affect directly the CPU performance. I had callisto drivers on my laptop but I took them out and this gave me a little bit more of headroom (just using VESA drivers). I guess is worth to build a conroe 945G - dual core...

  • 1 year later...

i also tried to set up a hackintosh daw with bad results till now..

i've got an acer aspire 1694 (2ghz intel pentium m sse2, 1gb of ram, ati radeon x700) running xxx 10.4.11 with 8.9.1 kernel. i had to mess around a bit to get everything working but the main problem is that in logic pro 8.0.1 i can't even play a few notes on a software synth without getting high cpu spikes causing the audio engine to stop. i am a bit lost i admit...

the audio card is a phonic firefly 302 and the audio samples are on a separate hard drive..

any idea?

maybe my specs aren't enough powerful but the it's very strange to get this kind of performances...

thought maybe an usb problem?
