@deeveedee

I have read your article and I have the same model of laptop as you, DELL E6410. I have a question about how to install High Sierra: E6410 supports UEFI boot, do I necessarily need to use OpenCore's LegacyBoot utility to install Duet? Looking forward to your reply. Thank you very much. I am a newcomer and I apologize for seeking your help in this way.

@Flynn Huang It's been a while, but I was not able to boot macOS with the E6410 UEFI boot capability.  When I first tried, I was using CLOVER boot-loader in this thread.  You may want to try UEFI again with Open Core.  I look forward to hearing about your progress!

... and no apology necessary.  This is a perfectly acceptable way to ask for help!

@deeveedee Hi:

I tried to boot and install directly using UEFI, and it seems to be no problem. Until the last two minutes of installation, as shown below. Then the screen went black and no response. I don't know if you've encountered it before?

I fully used the EFI attachment you shared, it was so perfect. The only thing I noticed was that the MACOS serial number and other details were not filled in the config. plist file. I wonder if this has any impact? If there are any other areas that need to be modified according to the actual situation, please provide guidance.

Also, I will try other versions of DMG, I think it's almost successful.

Look forward to your reply. Wishing you a happy weekend. Thank you.

@Flynn Huang Congratulations on your progress!  The EFI that I provide does not include the Serial Number and other private Platform info.  You need to generate that yourself so that it is unique for your hack.

Use this.

@deeveedee

Sorry to trouble you again, High Sierra has been successfully installed and can now enter macOS normally. But I encountered a problem, when I replaced the EFI file in the macOS system disk and tried to boot it from the system disk, I couldn't succeed. The phenomenon is that the Apple logo appears without a progress bar. Using a USB flash drive or optical drive with a disk slot can boot into the system normally. I don't know if you have a solution?
I noticed this phenomenon when installing High Sierra. When I copied the custom EFI to the USB installation disk, it also couldn't start. The phenomenon is the same as above. I used the Optical drive slot disk to boot the disk and installed the image on the USB drive to the main disk.

Looking forward to your reply, thank you!

Are you asking me to help you with UEFI booting of the E6410?  If so, I never got that working, so I don't have anything to offer.  If I misunderstood your question, please ask again.

@deeveedeeHi:

it will be OK. I am now able to use the system normally, although there are still some minor issues. For example, using two hard drives, one as the boot disk and the other as the system disk. And the boot disk cannot start automatically yet, although it has been set as the first boot in the BIOS, it can only be manually started by pressing F12 during startup. But it doesn't affect my use, after all, I am already grateful that such an old machine can work properly.
I analyze that there are two reasons. Firstly, there is a problem with installing the image. It is not easy to obtain a bootable MacOS image. Fortunately, I now have MacOS and will try to create my own USB bootable image in the future. Because I have been alone in the study facing the computer these days, my wife and son have already had objections to me.I will pause for a period of time.😄
The second reason is due to this old device. When I insert multiple USB drives, it is difficult to enter the BIOS, so I have to try many methods during installation. Fortunately, it was successful.
Of course, the most likely scenario is that E6410 does not support such UEFI booting, as you said you have not tried it successfully either. This issue does not currently affect my use, so I will try to improve it when I have the opportunity in the future.
Thank you very much for your help. My next goal is to follow in your footsteps and install a newer MacOS. Wishing you happiness every day, God bless you!

@Flynn Huang When I get some time, I will post my current Open Core EFI in this thread for booting Big Sur through Sequoia.  it works very well and is based on Open Core 1.0.2.  Although, by the time I post it, it may be based on Open Core 1.0.3 ;)  Congratulations on your success and good luck with your future macOS upgrades.

@Flynn Huang I follow my instructions here for High Sierra and my instructions here for Big Sur+.  Always works without issues for me.

EDIT: You were experimenting with UEFI booting.  Is it possible that your BIOS is configured wrong for legacy boot?  See this post for BIOS settings.

@deeveedeeBased on your user's  experience, which version of macOS do you think E6410 is most suitable for?
Although High Sierra supports Nvidia natively, it is somewhat outdated and some software is no longer supported. I am planning to upgrade it now. thank you!

forget @ helper

Ventura is still supported and is the latest version that does not need Wi-Fi root patches. It is fully supported by my posted EFI.

@Flynn Huang I think you have posted enough to be able to comment in threads outside of the New Users Lounge.  If that's the case, please ask any additional questions and post your macOS progress in my Dell Latitude E6410 thread here.  That would be most helpful to others who are following that thread.  Thank you.

Copy that 😊

@Flynn Huang I have uploaded my latest Open Core 1.0.3 EFI for Dell Latitude E6410.  This EFI fully supports Big Sur through Sequoia.  Be sure to read my instructions for use of the EFI here.  I am currently using this same EFI to boot the latest release versions of macOS (at the time of this post) for Big Sur through Sequoia.

At the time of this post, do not upgrade Safari beyond version 18.1.1.  Read my thread for more info.

Thank you very much for sharing, you are so great.

@Flynn Huang Good luck with your hack.  I enjoy tinkering with the old Latitude E6410 just because it amazes me that a non-Apple-laptop from 2010 is running macOS Sequoia.  In my opinion, the best currently supported macOS for this hack is Ventura.  There are hardware limitations that become more pronounced when using Sonoma and Sequoia.  Of the "newer" versions of macOS that are supported by my OC 1.0.3 EFI, Big Sur is the most responsive followed by Monterey (my opinion), but Big Sur and Monterey are no longer receiving Apple updates.

With OCLP post-install patches, Big Sur actually runs on this hack as though it's natively supported.

Just for fun, I upgraded my High Sierra EFI for this hack to Open Core 1.0.3 with the latest Acidanthera kexts (at the time of this post) and all works well.  I also switched from FakeSMC to VirtualSMC to be consistent with my BigSur+ EFI.  I forgot how responsive High Sierra is on this hack and how perfectly it runs.  I may or may not update my posted EFI for High Sierra (not updated yet), since there is really no technical reason to upgrade my currently posted EFI for High Sierra.
