Install Mac OS Ventura on HP Elitedesk 800 Mini G5 with recent BIOS 02.20 - not supported by deeveedee's popular guide

Hello everyone,

i built my first Hackintosh around 2007, mostly following popular mobos and guides on Tonymacx86.com before changing to an M1 Mini last year.

Now i came along a HP Elitedesk mini 800 G5 - using it mainly as a proxmox server.

I found deeveedee's wonderful guide here and started trying - but to no avail, the USB-installer starts but doesn't get me to the macOS Utilities, about half the progress bar the Elitedesk reboots...

What obviously doesn't fit in my setup is the BIOS version - which is newer (02.20) than the supported Bios versions - up to 02.15.00.

As i'm not really experienced in HP's surestart BIOS i'm not able to downgrade the BIOS - i put the right (?) file ("R21_021500.bin") on a 32 GB USB-Stick, the BIOS Update Procedure seems to work - but the BIOS Version stays the same...

Any advice on this?

Thanks in advance!

Stefan

@stefan-2011 Hi, Stefan! Welcome! Others have reported that my guide works fine with the latest BIOS. I just haven't updated my guide to reflect new BIOS version numbers. If you are using an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini, the the guide should work for you without issues. Make sure you have properly configured your BIOS as indicated in the guide (BIOS instructions attached to Post #1).

Hi deeveedee,

thanks for your input - good to know that bios version should not be an issue!

I prepared another USB-stick-installer and used both USB ports on the front - or is there any specific port to use?

I followed your bios instructions as far as possible - but cannot uncheck "Legay Boot Order" in Boot Options, since it is grayed out...

--> Still not getting to the install programm, only reboot.

By the way, i don't get an option to clear NVRAM at the boot loader.

Any help appreciated - thanks!

Stefan

@stefan-2011 tap the spacebar at the OC bootmenu to show hidden extended menu options. You will need to review my OC config.plist and make sure you understand the options configured.

@stefan-2011 Have you confirmed that your SSD is macOS compatible?

Hello deeveedee,

i found the option to clear NVRAM - but makes no difference, i just see the apple logo but but the progress bar still doesn't fill, at about one third the elitedesk reboots...

What i don't really understand are your recommandations concerning display out:

i have a machine with 2 DPs and 1 VGA - i am using the DP outlet directly into my display mit DP-in.

--> Might that be the problem?

Of course im using your EFI with new serial numbers etc...

Any idea left?

thanks!

Stefan

@stefan-2011 Have you confirmed that your SSD is macOS compatible?  Read this and this.  If you're still having problems, post your Open Core EFI with each request for help.

EDIT: Virtually every issue that I have encountered with EliteDesk 800 G4 / G5 Mini (including SSD compatibility) is documented here.

EDIT2: Also, if you are installing Sonoma 14.4+, look at the very first issue here.  If you are still having problems and you need to post a request for further help, always post the following:

  • Your Open Core EFI (attached as a compressed attachment)
  • The version of macOS that you are attempting to install

Hi deeveedee,

thanks for your reminding me on checking the SSDs - I forgot about the original factory built-in Hynix PC 601 nvme in the Elitedesk...

After removing it, it boots up to the install menu without problems...

Now i will get another WD nvme and go on with installing ventura on my Elitedesk mini.

I will return here if there are any problems left.

thanks!

Stefan
