Briony Posted October 17, 2006 Share Posted October 17, 2006 Hey, i'm new here, and I don't know if there has already been a thread about this, but I had a quick look and I couldn't see one. If there is though, please give me a link Right, so i've decided to put OSX onto my Dell Inspiron 6000. I read somewhere that you need certain hardware in order to make it successful. I have no idea whether my laptop has the right hardware because I couldn't find an exact list of what's needed, nor could I find a decent detailed spec of my laptop. I tried it anyway and here's what happened... Basically I formatted the hard drive and got rid of the partitions. I installed OSX onto it, which ran quite smoothly. However on the automatic reboot, it didn't reboot. It came up with 'b0 error'. I googled this and followed the 'using install dvd to fix b0 error' section on the following page... http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.ph...k:Vmware_how_to Then, on rebooting after this, all I saw was the grey screen with the apple, the little turny thing, and like a stop sign or no entry sign. I decided to format the hard drive and start again and re-install OSX. This time I chose to do the custom install, which included the patches for SSE2 and SSE3 (I read somewhere that these were necessary for it to work properly). After that, when it tried to automatically reboot after installation, it asked me to select the startup volume, then it tried to load a whole load of things (like drivers and such things), then it displayed a load of writing that I dont understand. But the last thing it says is 'backtrace terminated - invalid frame pointer 0x0' I then tried to boot it using the '-v' command. It did the same thing. As with the '-x' command. I do not know what these commands are exactly. I just read somewhere to give them a go. I then went back to the installation cd. Booted from that. Pressed f8 to enter startup options, and then typed the '-v' command. It then loads drivers and other such 'stuff', displays a whole load of other writing, lauches crash reporter, and then says 'no airport driver found', then continually says ' SAM multimedia: READ or WRITE failed, ASC=0x11, ASCQ=0x00' I have no idea what to try next. I don't understand a lot of the technical words (as you can probably tell from my description of what i did!) but in practice i'm fairly capable, once somebody has explained to me what to do! If anyone could help me it'd be muchly appreciated but go easy with the long words and technical jargon Thanks! The Baron Posted October 17, 2006 Share Posted October 17, 2006 You're going to have to re-install. When you get to the installer screen, choose SSE2 OR SSE3 (Not both). You can see which to use by using CPU-Z in Windows - this will show the capability of your cpu. Do I need to re-install windows just to look at the CPU-Z, or is there another way of finding out the capabilty of my cpu... like in the bios maybe? Briony Posted October 17, 2006 Author Share Posted October 17, 2006 Firstly: Thank-you to AndyMCR, I finally got it to boot up For those having the same problem, this is my processor: '1.6 GHz Intel Pentium M 730 (Sonoma), 533MHz FSB and PCIe x16 chipset' so I had to install it with the SSE2 options, not the SSE3 option. Secondly: Unfortunately theres another problem. I have no sound, it can't detect any outputs. I also can't seem to turn on my wireless. Now this may be a lack of knowledge on macs and the setting whereabouts.
