Hello everyone,

I just installed 10.4.6 JaS on my workstation and have now gotten a pretty nice system going.

Problems fixed:

ATi 9500 PRO - running at 1280x960@85Hz with QE, QE2D and CI using Callisto b006

Realtek AC97 - working thanks to driver found on the forum

..however, when i try i play DvDs i get very choppy playback. I tried VLC and it is better but still really bad. Any ideas on how to fix this?

edit:

Wey got it working now. DvD Player is still choppy but VLC works great now. All I had to do was enable UDMA for my SiS655 IDE controller using the info found here

:tears: funny, how OSX can't even get a basic DVD to play properly without "advanced" graphics cards....

Oh well, I rarely watch a DVD anyways. And if need be, I can I always do it in Windows.

Rammjet: Is there a workaround for this problem? I at least have QE and CI

That's some thing that amazes me right there about OSX; how an integrated video card is able to pull off QE/CI; while a dedicated video card like mine, can't do it?

Man..... craziness. Maybe someday there will be Mobility 9k drivers out .... maybe.

Well, I have QE/CI both on my laptop with GMA900 graphics, and on my workstation with ATi9500 PRO. And I do watch alot of dvds so i really want to get this working.

Rammjet: Could this not have anything to do with my ATA-drives running in PIO mode or something?

Get a processor capable of SSE3.

The problem with QE and CI isn't that it requires high end cards. It requires drivers.

You are running a hacked OS on a computer for which it was not intended and you are watching video on cards without adequate drivers. And you are blaming Apple because you can't watch a video.

From Apple website:

Quartz Extreme functionality is supported by the following video GPUs: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX and later, or any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU. A minimum of 16MB VRAM is required.

If you had adequate drivers, you would be getting QE and CI.

And since all Apple Intel machines are SSE3, they only compile their software to be compatible with that. The fact that SSE2 works at all is because of a hack.

So, suck it up.

Well I never said anything about that but ok...

I am fully aware of the fact typing in this text in Safari on my system is against the law of OS X. So if I cannot get DvDs to work I would never dream of blaming apple for it. I am sure that there are zero problems with dvd playback on any mac you can get a hold of, and I would love to have one but I simply do not have the cash required.

Back to topic.. :D

Is there a socket 478 CPU with SSE3?

Ok, did some research, and found that P4 Prescott has SSE3 and it runs on the same socket. However it suffers from heat problems and still would cost me about $100 which makes it not worth it, at least not for me.

Well well, guess you cannot have it all

I hear you ... I'm just giving Apple a hard time. It's really not that big of a deal with me; as 90% of everything i do on my laptop works for the most part. My desktop runs OSX just fine, not a hitch.

Just a shame the frame rate couldn't be a little faster. :) Thanks for the input though, many thanks! :D

$100 for DVD playback.... ouch, what a pain.

Or you could just boot into windows. Just make a partition just for Windows; you'll definately need it for something or the other eventually.
