I am new to Insanely Mac, new to Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Mac OS X Lion. I want to install Lion on my vmware workstation. I heard somewhere that for Lion to get installed, an already installed and upgraded snow leopard system is needed. Is that rule apply for installing on vmware?.

I want to try a clean installation without using pre installed vmware images available in net. i have vmware workstation 7.1.4, a Snow Leopard 10.6 retail dmg and a lion retail 10.7 dmg.

Can you advice me which version of workstation is better compatible to install SL and Lion, vmware workstation 7.1.4 or new vmware workstation 8.0?.

Also please tell me the best and latest guide, their respective unlockers and patches for clean installing SL and then Lion on 7.1.4 and 8.0?

Thanks in advance... :(

OSXInstaller,

Sorry for my delayed response, if you want to run Lion, best use either Player 4 or Workstation 8, using the latest Unlocker from Zenith432, based on Donk's original, a new version is due very soon!

Then you need to take your downloaded InstallESD.dmg and create a bootable USB stick, this is in effect the same as the Lio USB Stick on the Apple website, which I purchased. Then create your guestOS using the wizard, available once the Unlocker is installed, and during the guestOS boot add the USB stick to the VM, will get to a shell prompt at which point type "boot" followed by return, things should then progress as normal, see the following links for additonal assistance:

MSoK, you didnt tell can i install Lion as a new virtual machine using the lion dmg without requiring already installed Snow Leopard?. I heard Lion needs snow leopard to install!!.

Correct me if am wrong!!.

Also there is Donks W8 Unlocker. Which is best and final?, Donks or Zenith's?.

why using USB and boot options, if we can simply install Lion pointing vmware cd/dvd drive to iso file of InstallESD.dmg.

Cant lion be installed directly using iso??..

OSXI',

Firstly, yes you can install Lion without having SL installed, except you need SL to download Lion from the App Store, unless you buy the Lion USB Stick from Apple.

The best Unlocker for Workstation 8, Player 4 and Fusion 4 is currently Zenith432's "Consolidated" version (this is a collaboration between Zenith432 and Donk), however, keep an eye on my "How to for W8, P4 and F4" as Donk has added some scripts, to the "Consolidated Unlocker" he and Zenith432 have been working on, so when released this will be the definitive version.

I do not know why creating an iso from the dmg will not work, and believe me I have been trying!

So four methods currently work, or have worked for me, upgrade your SL, and change your vmx config file to read guestOS = "darwin11-64" or "darwin11" for "Lion" rather than "darwin10-64" or "darwin10" for "Snow". Secondly buy the Lion USB stick from Apple and mount the USB stick during the boot of your guestOS shell, or third create your own Lion USB stick from the InstallESD.dmg downloaded from the App Store, and use restore under Disk Utility to create your Lion Install on a USB stick, but this needs a running OS X Snow. Finally you can create a VMware disk and install the Lion Installer, and use this VMware disk to initially boot and Install Lion, this is in effect doing just the same as creating the USB stick just to a virtualo hard disk rather than a physical USB drive / stick.

Please ask any further questions in the "How To W8, P4 & F4" topic, as it is easier to monitor a single or could of topics, link below:

yep, thats correct.

But there is a simple method if you already have a SL VM and WKS7

Should work with WKS8.

MSoK,

yesterday upgraded workstation 7.1.4 to new version 8.0.

3 days ago i did a clean snow leopard installation on 7.1.4 without installing additional vmware tools, audio and video drivers.

Yesterday when i upgraded workstation to 8.0, i applied Zenith's Unlocker and upgraded snow leopard vm to 8.0 compatibility. Then installed vmware tools from darwin401.iso successfully getting resolutions upto 2400.

But i am not getting any sound and desktop needs to be scrolled to bottom to view the dock of snow leopard.

why am not getting any sound and the above desktop instability after installing vmware tools?

will i have to install audio and video drives separately other than vmware tools?.

why vmware tools wont provide sound and video stability??>

If thats the case where do i get latest audio and video drivers for Workstation 8.0?

These are the settings i use for Snow,

RAM: 1gb

Processors: 1

Hard Disk(SCSI): 15GB [Virtual device node - SCSI 0:0 Hard disk (SCSI)]

CD/DVD (IDE): Using drive G: [Virtual device node - IDE 1:0 CD/DVD (IDE)]

Also what is this Guest Package and guestd patches?.

Do i want them?.
