I know about those ExtraDataItem hacks to allow retail kernel installs, but it did not work for me because I have i3 processor, and as far as I know, 10.6.0. does not support i series of CPUs.

So I disabled EFI in Virtualbox options and used ##### to install Snow Leopard 10.6.0. from a retail DVD. Generally everything went fine, but at some point where the progress bar told me that there are 15 minutes left till the end, I got a gray message in multiple languages:

"you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button"

I have seen kernel panics before, usually then there are visible console style text all over the screen. But there was no such console-ish text this time. So I hope it was OK.

I rebooted the VM again using ##### and installation completed successfully - I got sound and could add a user account, then desktop appeared, then the keyboard configuration message. And at the end my mouse was stuck. It just sits at the edge of the screen. I had to Reset the VM. After booting back everything seemed OK, I launched Safari, network was OK, sound OK, USB 2 flash drive was working (I installed VirtualBox Extensions on the host).

Calling "About this Mac" causes the desktop to crash and restart, but as I have read, this is OK for unsupported CPUs.

Then I did a straight combo 10.6.8. update, enabled EFI back, disconnected ##### and was able to boot into OS. But the mouse is stuck and I guess the keyboard does not work either.

I went to the snapshot before the update and cpied IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext to some folder, then I went forward at the 10.6.8. update ending phase snapshot and tried to copy those kexts over the original ones. But MAC told me that extensions were installed in a wrong way and cannot be used. When I rebooted, mouse was stuck again. Then I went to http://www.sysprobs.com/fix-usb-mouse-stop...6-update-vmware

and downloaded their OUSBFamily-378.pkg and installed it.

Now the mouse is working (curious, what did this pkg install, if the article told that I should be fine just by copying those kexts over the new ones?).

But I cannot boot using EFI any more, I get a kernel panic, something related to IOACPIFamily. So I have to use ##### again. And "About My Mac" still makes the desktop crash ;) I hoped that 10.6.8. will work ok because it supports i3.

Now the question is: what is wrong with 10.6.8. on VirtualBox 4.1.? Why I have a choice - nonworking mouse and booting from EFI or working mouse (old kexts) but no EFI boot and still crashing "About My Mac"?
