I've been using my Hackintosh (EP45-UD3P in an Antec case/power supply) since about Feb. 2011 and it's been great; rock solid stable and fast. However, I came into the office occasionally to see that the computer had rebooted. Thinking it was my old UPS glitching, I went out and bought a brand new one with more VA capability, better filtering, etc.

And it keeps rebooting. I noticed that once or twice when I came into the room and switched on the CFL lighting, the computer spontaneously rebooted as well. I suspect this is RFI causing the computer to reset. The power cord does run within a few feet of the lighting track, and obviously any disturbance generated downstream of the UPS is not going to get smothered by the regulator.

OK, so here's the question: is it more likely that the problem is a duff power supply, or a bad motherboard? The machine is still completely stable during normal operations. I've actually witnessed one or two of the incidents, and the power supply is clearly turning off, just like when you tell the machine to shut down. But it comes right back on and reboots without a problem.

I've gotten a replacement power supply, so it may be quicker to just swap it out and see what happens, but I'd be interested in any other documented experiences of this sort of thing...

I don't use UPS. But obviously it's the last thing to suspect in this case. It looks more like PC hardware issue. A spontaneous reboot may indicate one of the two:

  • PSU is going to die
  • Some hardware device(s) is/are overheating and coses system to reboot

Check if all coolers/heatsinks are in place and holds firmly. Check if all the fans are spinning. Check if there are dust collected on CPU/GPU coolers and inside PSU.

If all the above is OK, then check PSU (by replacing with known to work one).
