Using Un-Allocated Win partition for O SX backup

I have my OS X(tomymacx86 mac pro 3.1/[url="http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/279450-why-insanelymac-does-not-support-tonymacx86/"]#####[/url]) installed on a single 40GB IDE HD. When I boot into my OS X it can see my 250GB Vista HD. I partitioned(Shrunk) the 250GB HD and now have a 40GB unallocated partition. From Vista the only option I have it is to create a simple volume which I have not done yet. When I boot into OS X it still sees the 250GB HD as just that(250GB). I booted into a Ubuntu live disk to see what it could see. Using Gparted Partition Editor on the Ubuntu disk I could see the unallocated partition, however the options to create a HFS or HFS+ partition were greyed out. The options available to me were Btrfs, Ext2/3/4, Fat16/32, NTFS, UFS, XFS and Linux-Swap. I want to use this partition to backup my existing OS X install before I attempt the 10.6.8 update as I really do not want to loose all the time and effort that got me to where I am today, my OS X install is running really well with everything working and a fair few app's installed. If if were not for the upcoming Lion I may not even bother with 10.6.8, but then again? Anyway I would appericate some guidence as to what I have to do next to use the 40GB unallocated partition as a backup disk for my OS X install.

 

 

EDIT: I took a chance and tried it myself. Because Vista would only let me set up an NTFS Volume(original disk is NTFS) I booted with the Ubuntu disk and created a FAT32 partition using the unallocated disk space. When I booted into OS X it then saw the seperate 40GB partition. I was then able to use Time Machine to erase the partition and set it up for use by Time Machine and now have my system backed up. Now for 10.6.8.
