Bloodworth
So I have this old, I mean REALLY old Dell desktop sitting around and I thought I'd try something crazy with it. Basically I want to install "some kind of working" version of OSX (preferably 10.6 or higher) on a Dell Dimension L933r. The purpose of this is to have the resulting hackintosh serve some drives (NTFS and HFS+) to the other computers in the network (if I can get OSX on it, I know I can setup the sharing properly). The specs for the Dell are pretty grim: -933MHz Pentium III Processor -512MB of 133MHz SDRAM (no, not even DDR) -Intel 810e video chip (whatever that is) I just need it to sit there and serve files/drive roots and possibly a printer in the future, so I don't expect it - or care for it - to do anything else well or even at all. I don't even really care how fast it runs. Can something like this be done? If so, what installation methods should I try? 3.14r2
It is way too old for Snow Leopard/Leopard. Even a Tiger will not work on this. Main problem is CPU and GPU (VGA). To run OS X properly a CPU should support at least SSE2. As far as I know P3 does have only SSE (no SSE2 or higher). So no go. Install Linux. It is better OS for the purpose. srs5694
Install Linux. It is better OS for the purpose. I concur. A non-bloated Linux distribution, such as Debian, Lubuntu, or Slackware should do the job just fine on a computer with those specs. It'll probably even use many of the same server programs you'd use on OS X. Bloodworth
Yeah, I didn't realize Pentium III's didn't have SSE2 (also, as I said, as long as I get some image on the screen to see what I'm doing, I could care less about the video/graphics capabilities or quality). I decided to just buy a cheap motherboard to fix a broken desktop, so I'm planning on using that as a "hackintosh server". One of the purposes of having an OSX environment for the server was because I want to use my MacBook Pro's Time Machine drive over the network instead of having to remember to pull it out and set it up it every so often to back up. I figure by having the MacBook connect to the drive on login, it'll back up the computer every time I'm home without me having to remember. I know Linux has some stuff that can use AFP, but I'd rather not mess with that, because Unix systems are just plain weird to me. OSX is as far as I am willing to go in that direction, only because it does a good job of covering up its "Unix-ness" (to my impression, at least). Thanks for the replies, though!
