Trying to get OSX 10.6.3 (following a guide from here) on my:

P6X58D-E, Core i7-950, 12GB

ATI Radeon HD 5870

SATA DVDRW on port 0

Corsair 128GB SSD on port 1

Diskutil sees the drive at the installer, but attempting to erase / create a empty HFS partition with GUID only results in it "Unmounting Disk" forever.

I used a boot CD to erase the existing partitions and make it effectively an empty disk (though I didn't attempt to convert to GUID from that tool)... but still, no joy.

Any ideas welcome!
