Timberwolf
I'm having problems dual booting OS X 10.6.5 and Windows 7 on my Dell Mini 10v. I have read several ways of doing this but through trial and error I've failed. I'll rundown my setup process to (hopefully) find the problem quicker. Any help is appreciated! 1. Boot into Windows 7 wipe the HDD to 160GB unallocated space. 2. Boot into OS X, Disc Utility. 3. Format 3 partitions. 70GB OSX Journaled. 70GB Windows 7 Fat32. 20GB shared media between 2 OS's, Fat32. 4. Install OSX correctly, fully functional. Update to 10.6.5 5. Install W7 correctly, fully functional. ------------------------------ Here's where I've tried and failed 6a. Boot Windows. Open cmd. Attempt to set OSX active. (the problem here is OSX doesnt show up as a partition. I went back into Windows Install USB and it says its still unallocated space) 6b. Boot into OSX Install USB. (I choose either Install CD or OSX it doesnt matter. It gets to the white screen with the apple and says its loading but doesnt). I'm kind of stuck as to what I should do. I would like to avoid another wipe and install if possible, but if not, oh well thats just trial and error I suppose. Markrtoon
Use Gparted live, or Parted Magic, for setting the boot volume as active. Quote Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/241040-dual-boot-problem/#findComment-1610077 Share on other sites
Timberwolf
Can you run me though the process? Sorry I'm new to most of this. If I set the volume to active will I still have the boot problem with mac? The wheel never stopped so is it safe to say it was trying to boot still? Both the mac boot usb and the mac install on the hdd were taking a long time. I could just be impatient but I let the hdd mac load for a solid 45 minutes and the usb boot a solid 20. Markrtoon
No, changing the flags, will just change which OS boots. And if you want to see where that Mac OS X boot stops, then just type -v at the startup prompt, I've looked at the tutorial you're referring to. Just download the iso from here. Then burn it, boot it it'll probably ask for keyboard, and for graphics just do VESA, and the Gparted app should open automatically from there. Just right click on the partition you want to make active, and select "Manage Flags". Click "Boot" and then click close. Just reboot your pc, and you'll boot into whatever OS you decided on.
