10.6.5 + HD5870 = No HDMI (Solved)

The 10.6.5 update seemed to go smoothly (I used the combo update as I always do) but I've now discovered that the HDMI output on my XFX HD5870 has stopped working. Testing so far has revealed the following;

Using Kabyl's bootloader

(which I've been using completely successfully for quite some time now) the monitor (my TV on HDMI) is detected properly, but I only get a picture when sending it 480p.

Switching back to Netkas' ATY_Init.kext injector, the HDMI display is never detected.

Both the lower DVI and the display port, which I have a display port to dual link DVI adapter on, work fine.

Going back to 10.6.4 (yes I cloned my drive before I updated) everything is fine using either method.

I'm fine with booting into 10.6.4 when I want to watch a movie on my TV. I figured it was important to post results for the brain trusts who do so much of the brilliant work around here.

Though the HDMI out still works perfectly with 10.6.4 and after trying every single framebuffer combination, the solution was to give up on the HDMI port itself and use a DVI to HDMI adapter.

Three displays working off an XFX 5870 with an active (Apple) Displayport to Dual Link DVI adapter, a DVI to HDMI adapter and just a straight DVI out.

P.S. I also tried the Displayport to HDMI adapter, never even got the computer to recognize the display.

Jlamp how did you get it to work with dual screens? I gave up on direct HDMI as well and went with DVI to HDMI from the 5870, but it only sees one monitor.

Not sure what to say, they've all been working from day one with Kabyl's bootloader.

An issue I have seen (this a know apple problem) is that the card won't necessarily find or sync properly with the displays on first boot. Putting the displays to sleep or the entire computer to sleep then waking it fixed it. Another option is to unplug a display from the graphics card after boot then plug it back in again.

Are you on 10.6.4 or 10.6.5? If on .4 did you install the Apple Graphics Update? You'll need those to make it work properly.

Also, if you've installed any other kexts for the card or Netkas' ATY_Init.kext injector you'll need to get rid of those and flush the cache to make it go.

Let me know if any of that helps.

Yeah the Tonymac's ##### got rid of the Netkas kext, but after playing around a bit I realized that the ports matter in this setup for whatever reason. So finally on ports 2 and 4 of the 5870 both monitors were recognized properly and now even the sleep function works which is something I had problems with before. One more think I realize that HDMI was part of the problem, so I switched to DVI-HDMI connection and that was when the dual monitors exact model numbers were recognized by Mac OS and everything started functioning.

Also I have all this working on 10.6.5 so hopefully you can figure your problem and perform the upgrade.
