I examined my IDE config and my DVD-ROM is on IDE0 Slave, and the Hard drive is on IDE1 Master.

I can't change this in the bios, and I am guessing I cant change it on the motherboard either since this is a laptop. I've read that others have succeeded booting on the L5G laptops.

I am downloading a Bios update now to see if it has any positive effect... any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

I am using 10.4.3 (assuming patched, can't remember the original iso name).

I don't know, normal advice would be to try to get both hard drive and optical drive on the same ata chain, to make one of them master and the other slave using jumpers (no cable select). And if that didn't work, to reverse the master/slave settings.

But the waiting for root device is a hard one to solve.

Be sure to disconnect any attached drives including any flash drives.
