hi,

for a permanent sound installation, i need to modify two PowerMac G5's (the recent ones, dual core) so that an external relais can power up the computers. i'm worried about how to best attach wires to the power button. while the connector on the main board is SMD and thanks to apple's information policy i don't have the Pin layout, i thought the easiest is to remove the front panel and put wires in parallel with the power button on front of the computer. (i've done this before on a G3 but that box was comparably easy to open)

maybe i'm stupid, but it seems the front panel is glued(?) to the front, at least i can't find any screws or switches to unlock and remove it. is there a trick to remove the panel?

otherwise, is there a secret pmset option to have the computer boot whenever it's mains are powered? (the power is taken off overnight). i know there's an energy saver option that automatically boots after power loss, but it isn't working when the machine was shutdown normally.

thanks for help! best, -sciss-

You can set a specific time for the machines to start up and shutdown, if that would help you.

no unfortunately not, because the staff of the museum must be able to switch on and off the installation at variable times. the basically have one "on" and one "off" switch at their bureau, with electrics going down to the computer. i guess i'll try to break of that damn front panel, it's impossible that you cannot take it off??

thx, -sciss-

the problem solved itself ;-)

the machine i was beta-trying on was a G5 Dual Processor 2.7 which had that beasty glued non-accessible front panel. but the target machines actually were newer Dual Core 2.3 ones and the power button backside is directly visible with three pins, so it was rather easy to solder a parallel switch to it...

best, -sciss-
