I am looking for both specific recommendations, as well as any pointers toward established good resources that cover this topic, whether other forum topics, or websites. But up to date is good, and obviously compatible with Mac OS.

I've read that nVidia cards are easier to set up, but ATI has better bang for the buck these days and isn't *too* hard to get running. Is that a realistic statement?

My goal is some gaming (WoW, and doing justice to Diablo 3 would be a bonus but I assume that might put me out of this price range) and of course whatever special effects are standard in a Mac system.

thanks!

You might try this 4890. It's $209.99 and a quite good GPU - it'll easily handle WoW and presumably Diablo 3 (I don't know what kind of specs D3 will require, heh). I had a 4890 in my Mac Pro and loved it.

You're not going to get DX11 - any card capable of supporting it will not work under OS X at the current time.

I am just wondering if I can get a compatible card that does DX11 in Windows.

I've found that nvidias are easier to setup in a hackintosh (it used to be the ATIs were) but that ATIs give better performance in Macs. I still have a hack with x1900xtx, x-plane works well. As far as I know no DX 11 cards work in Mac yet. Great bang for buck and easy setup is EVGA 9800 GT. I haven't tried any of the 4xxx series but if you shop carefully they would perform really well.

Sounds like I should get one just good enough for WoW (which doesn't really have a high graphical bar) and wait and see when Diablo 3 comes out and what its requirements are, and maybe by then more cards will be compatible with the hackintosh.

I'll still probably try to get a 1GB card, hopefully I can find one toward the lower end of my price range... Sounds like that EVGA 9800 GT fits the bill quite nice: $140 from Newegg.
