thechad870
Hi, This is my 1st attempt at a Hackintosh build so I am completely open to suggestions on any or all of the components. I would like to build a Hackintosh that will dual boot windows 7 and osx on separate hds. The computer will primarily be used for video editing (Final Cut Pro and CS4). I would also like the motherboard to support usb 3.0 and be relatively upgradable but other than that I am pretty flexible. My budget is about $1000 can go over by a couple hundred if need be. Here is what I was lookin at getti 2X Western Digital 500 GB Caviar Black SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Bulk/OEM Desktop Hard Drive WD5001AALS Corsair CMX4GX3M2A1600C9 XMS3 4 GB PC3-12800 Core i5 Memory Kit EVGA 512-P3-N871-AR GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Retail Intel Core i7-860 Processor 2.80 GHz 8 MB LGA1156 CPU Antec BP550 Plus 550W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.2 Modular Active PFC Power Supply Samsung Internal Half Height DVD-W Supermulti SATA 22X Lightscribe (Black) COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case GIGABYTE GA-P55A-UD3 LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard If someone could recommend me a good compatible wireless card (g or n) that would be great too. Swhay
The best and easiest set up is the following. Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5 and a core i7 920 CPU The advantage with the Core i7 920 is that the Gigabyte board already supports the new Intel Hex Core coming soon Follow these two guides and you will have a very capable and very compatible "Mac Pro" EVERYTHING will work if you follow both guides. Install Guide: Kakewalk: Minimal effort install (EP45, EX58, P55, G41) Tweaking Guide: GA-EX58 and GA-X58A DSDT native power management modifications, lower CPU temperatures, turbo plus one clock ratio, sleep, etcetera a Here is a image capture of my build: Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212168-video-editing-hackintosh/#findComment-1422736 Share on other sites

I will be doing the same but different graphic card. I 'm thinking of using Radeon HD 4890 or Radeon HD 4870. I'll be doing heavy video and picture editing on Final Cut Pro 7 and Photoshop CS4. any suggestion? Btw, Does the sleep work for you? I saw some people are having problem with sleep. let me know Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212168-video-editing-hackintosh/#findComment-1423138 Share on other sites
Swhay
I love your combo. I will be doing the same but different graphic card. I 'm thinking of using Radeon HD 4890 or Radeon HD 4870. I saw some people are having problem with sleep. let me know I can't say much about graphics cards, you will have to do the research on the ATI cards. I choose the Apple (Nvidia) GT 120 due to the fact that it has a miniDisplay port and so does my 27" iMac, so I can connect my "Mac Pro" to my 27" As for sleep, yes EVERYTHING works as it should. 1. Sleep from menu 2. Sleep from idle (automatic sleep) 3. Sleep from power button 4. Wake from keyboard or mouse (wired) 5. Wake from power button 6. Restart 7. Shutdown After using the two guides I posted. I had everything working properly with only two non Apple Kext files 1. Realtek lan Kext (installed from Kakewalk) 2. Fakesmc Everything else is handled via Smbios.plist, com.apple.boot.plist and DSDT.aml and of course the bootloader. thechad870
@ Shway So I ended up going with your suggestions on the x58-UD5 board and i7-920 Got everything running in windows 7 fine but when I followed the instructions for Kakewalk I am having issues. When I insert the Snow Leopard disc as instructed, it boots into the apple screen and loads for a bit and then a grey curtain comes down and tells me I need to restart my computer. Also the BIOS settings that I changed according to the guide reset to their original values after I restart from the grey screen. I noticed in the 2nd link you posted with the tweaks that it seems that there might be a hack needed to stop the BIOS from resetting but I got the impression that those tweaks were for after OSX has been installed. Any insight to this would be awesome Thanks! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/212168-video-editing-hackintosh/#findComment-1427942 Share on other sites

Also, unplug your windows 7 drive for now, until you have SL up and running with no issues.
