Max Wilde
Hi Everyone, I'm a newb, so I apologize if I am bringing up old topics. I'm new to modding, and haven't really done much in the way of computer hardware building/tweaking aside from changing out RAM in a iMac or Mac Pro (I know, pretty amateur) but I am very comfortable with computers, and at least understand the fundamentals. I have a Late 2005 PowerMac G5, I want to mod it into a Hackintosh to run both Windows and Snow Leopard, while being as fast, or faster, than current Mac Pros to run both CS4, and work as a decent gaming rig. The G5 in question is fully functional, with 6GB RAM, and all original hardware intact. What I want to know is where I should start, what components can I keep in the machine, and what I would need to buy. I know that there are probably guides out there somewhere, but I haven't found anything definitive. I'd like to get some help with this project from the community, and will be posting updates and pics along the way. Any help with this project would be greatly appreciated, and If there is open topics on these questions I have asked, a redirect would also be appreciated! Thanks for you time! - Max Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208034-g5-hackintosh-questions/ Share on other sites
akira9000
If the machine in question is fully functioning its a real shame to destroy it. You will not build a hackintosh to match the current MacPros Im afraid. Very top end hardware in those bad boys. I totally understand, but from a performance stand point, the G5 PowerMac, is just a large, albeit gorgeous, paper weight. It was a great machine, but I got the entire thing for $500, and I already have 2 iMacs, and MacBook Pro. The PowerMac G5 serves little to no purpose. I know its a shame, but I'd like to have a more powerful machine for gaming, mainly Windows only, but having the option to boot into OS X would be great. Even if the hardware performance isn't quite on par with the Mac Pro, I'm sure I can get fairly close... right...? Scotty geek
Hey Max, Pretty much to do what you want you'd be having to gut the entire G5, having to do some metal cutting and more serious mods to the case in order to make it accommodate a PC motherboard. really the only thing that would be semi useful to use from it is the hard drive. and maybe the DVD drive. In all honesty you would be better off buying a new case and building the whole thing from scratch. Especially if you never did any metal work before. Now as far as building something that would rank up there with a Mac Pro, akira is right, its going to be a lot to put into it. At the end of the day, counting in frustrations, and research you might just want to buy a mac pro. But for the learning experience I can understand perfectly. I would first start looking through the Installation forums. People are always asking how their rig would work and recommendations to build new ones. you can see what kind of experience people had, how far they got, and then you can start getting an idea of what you will be in for. Welcome and best of luck! Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208034-g5-hackintosh-questions/#findComment-1389659 Share on other sites
akira9000
the sticky at the top of the mods section is a great place to start http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=4525 Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/208034-g5-hackintosh-questions/#findComment-1389908 Share on other sites
geiman
If you really want to do it, I'd say go for it. I'm in the middle of the same kind of mod right now, and as long as you are comfortable with using a dremel its not that difficult. And performance wise, you can definitely build something extremely powerful that would rival a current MacPro. There are even a few dual CPU boards that you can use to mimic the dual CPU MacPro's. As long as the hardware you get allows you to do a nice vanilla install, I'd say go for it.
