Jukeus
Hi All I bought a 4870 (Dark Knight) card and attempted to flash it, counted my blessings when I managed to recover it and sold it at a loss. I then moved to the imac27" (Beautiful machine) but I gave that back because I now know I will be doing a lot of After Affects in the future and so have decided to hold out with my aging Mac Pro 1.1 until the new ones come out and I can afford one! I've been trying to find the 4870 cards listed in various tutorials but they are all discontinued. the XFX and Sapphires. I have the 2 special power supply cables already and trying to find a stable and hopefully quiet card with a kick. Can anyone recommend an Available card with a tutorial to boot for me to get? I generally try to do my own research before asking questions. I'm stuck and truly appreciate your time and guidance. Thanks Juke Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/205920-best-flashed-option-for-mac-pro-2006-plz-help/ Share on other sites

Chances are second hand 4870s will pop up quite regularly on eBay. I've got two 1GB XFX 4870s that I flashed to use in my Mac Pro until I gutted it to build my Hack Pro and they both worked great. Quick Q, were you running the 2 cards in crossfire or for multiple monitors? Spanky Deluxe
Hi SpankyThanks for the response. Quick Q, were you running the 2 cards in crossfire or for multiple monitors? I was running them in crossfire for Windows use. Due to the architecture of the Mac Pro 1,1 logic board, I had to run them both at only 8x PCIe1.1 speeds. However, this didn't prove to be a major performance loss and two 1GB 4870s at 8x PCIe1.1 speeds were certainly a hell of a lot faster than one 4870 at 16x PCIe1.1 speeds. If you do plan on doing the same as me then you'll need two PCIe Y splitters so as to power each 4870 from one of the board headers. They're pretty easy to get hold of or you could roll your own fairly easily using the included PCIe power cables that come with the graphics cards. I'd also suggest you get 1GB cards if possible so as to minimise the slowdown caused by the PCIe bus.
