Alright, I know this has been posted before, I read through that topic and nothing worked for me, so I'm making this and starting from scratch.

My setup:

Abit A8n-sli

AMD FX-55

EVGA 7900GT 256mb

etc I don't think the rest is super relevant

What I did:

Followed this guide to a T, with the exception of using a terminal based DSDT patcher, because the gui version wouldn't let me edit the source before it built.

Where my problems started:

I got down to where I would log in to singleuser mode, I got there but was unable to rebuild the kext cache, it gave me an error..something like Illegal argument after a few seconds of building, sorry I didn't take a picture of that.

Thinking "oh well", I exited singleuser mode, only to have it throw me back in. I typed exit again and the system hung, forcing me to hard reset. When my system came to, I just let it boot in -v mode to see how far it would get, and that's when I saw the problem:

As you can see, I have fakesmc.kext there and it's getting loaded, and there is no dsmos.kext in sight on the drive anywhere.

I have tried running the /S/L/C Extensions folder through Kext Utility and it repaired permissions, but did not generate the mkext file.

Under the hood:

All the files that I downloaded with that guide, which includes whatever version of Chameleon came with it, and the corresponding boot file, plus the kexts and utilities.

In my Extra folder I have:

com.apple.Boot.plist (modified)

smbios.plist (modified)

In the /E/ Extensions folder I have the following kexts:

AHCIPortInjector.kext*

ATAPortInjector.kext*

Disabler.kext*

fakesmc.kext

IOAHCIBlockStorageInjector.kext*

JMicronATAInjector.kext*

NullCPUPowerManagement.kext

OpenHaltRestart.kext

PlatformUUID.kext

AppleNForceATA.kext

*I did not put the ones with the star in this folder, there were there following the Chameleon install, so I don't know if they're necessary or not

Also, not sure if it makes a difference in this case, but I'm using the mach_kernel.test7 kernel.

Well, a rather lengthy post, but hopefully it's enough information that somebody will recognize a problem and help me out. I'm willing to try anything, since this is a separate HD with SL on it, and I still have the disc safely on my flash drive. Thanks!

[EDIT] It looks to me like it's using Chameleon 2 RC1, so it must be the PC EFI 10 or 10.1 boot file, not sure if that'd make a difference

[EDIT 2] Never mind, it's RC2, but I still don't know what version the boot file is

I never actually got booting from the CD to work, weird things would always happen such as not seeing my hard drives, or getting to the install screen then just stopping.

I just put PC_EFI v10.3 boot file in, and made some other changes as per the nForce guide (as I have an nForce chipset), including:

fakesmc.kext v2 (I realized I only had v1 installed, so I'm gonna see what this does)

different AppleNforceATA.kext file, made by somebody else

some networking kexts related to my chipset

I haven't restarted yet to see what difference they make, but I'll edit this post with the updates when I do, hopefully the edit will come from SL!

[EDIT] Just rebooted, tried just -v, and arch=i386 flags, still getting the Waiting for DSMOS message, looks like I'm back to the drawing board
