Gamer R3D
I'm currently typing this from my Kalyway install. All seems well with a few exceptions; if anyone has input it will be greatly appreciated. Hardware is as follows: Kalyway 10.5.2 intel/AMD Asus A8N32-SLI DELUXE AMD 4400 X2 @2.5GHZ Corsair TWINX PC4000 @ 250MHZ EVGA 8800 320 GTS (Creative Xtreme Gamer installed but using the onboard sound AC97 nvidia based) WD RAPTOR-Leopard installed ;-) I have also noticed that most if not everyone skips over the most important of all settings.. Their distribution (Kalyway) customize settings.... WTF guys :-D Here are mines: Default kernel: Kernel_9.2_sleep Video:Nvinject 320 (specific to your gpu) Audio: AC97 nvidia audio (specific to your chipset audio) NIC: Full selection (This particular board has a dual lan-both Marvell and Nvidia.. I selected all nic options) Mother board/Chipset: This is an AMD system so all are selected Third-party apps: Take your pic SSE_JAS 1048: AMD system, all selected Patches: default, boot with cpu=1 selected AMD patches: Use one or the other not both, 2 worked for me I haven't tried 1 Additional notes: I have occasional freeze ups on opening certain app, really cant say which at this point I believe its random so far. If there is no internet on boot up try simply unplugging the lan cable and plugging it back in (use LAN port 2 I believe that is the Marvel on and not the nVIDIA one), I can't seem to boot with out the bloody DVD in (some help with that anyone!!) Adium works for messenger in the KOOLSOFTS folder (depends on what you add) SPACES is a complete waste to me since I'm using dual monitors :-), I'd really like to not have to boot with the DVD in AGAIN lol... I didn't know Mac had a voice lolol the system clock :-/. So as I have listed (as everyone else who cares about this community should :-)) Here are all of my setting...ALL that allows me to enjoy this. I'm still overclocking the {censored} out of my i7 at the moment and Win 7 is the {censored} on it in time over the next few weeks I'll put this copy on it or download the Snow version via transmission on this AMD system and burn the DMG if I can to make the conversion. Why not just install on intel and save myself the hassle-Because I like the challenge and I started this a year ago and now have a copy that is decent on AMD. So again if anyone can help me further patch this baby up pleas give me a holla ;-) Addition note: There seems to be an issue with certain programs updating, and then some do just fine. Gmail notifier works. Onyx works and I think I updated it. Perian updated just fine (don't know what the hell it is will research when I get bored) iTunes update causes a system wide freeze... Issue reason is reported as: "no mountable file system" (anyone care to share on that one... also downloads via Safari seem to freeze, not sure if its the same as iTunes (will explore) Okay its been like 6 hours now, I hooked up my surround speakers... As far as freezing goes it seems to be localized; to what I don't know. but haven't had any since, even after a few restarts which weren't because of issues downloading music running iTunes web pages copying and pasting.. the whole {censored}.. problem free.. Can't wait to put this on my i7 this {censored} is gonna fly, is flying now! No to the issues.... I use a Razer gaming mouse.. it works! however.. my usb harddrive doesnt show up, nor does my iPhone. Anyone got pointers? I'm going to format a spare hd and see what happens.. also I will install macdrive and see whats the deal. Addition: It's been another couple hours and I started using transmission, and I believer it is causing the system to freeze... I will refrain from using it and see how things go. I've come to this conclusion since, as the above states, everything was pretty cool.. the crashes came after using transmission. Addition: it's been over an hour or so.. still at it. Just installed my HP printer; used software update to locate the mac driver. Was too lazy to go get my mac disk that came with the printer. Also, on this forum there is a work around for the booting issue without DVD.. I will attempt to use it. Will report back. Additional note: Its been another 2 hours, the startupfiletool method doesn't work to fix the no DVD issue it spits out 1 line of something.. can't remember.. I don't remember my linux but if my drive is mounted on the first SATA connector does that make it rdisk0s1 or 0s0 this could be why it didnt work but I'm not sure. Anyone one with answers please drop a line. Also, the chameleon package (i used 2 of them) doesn't fix the no DVD boot either. Additionl note: Went to bed, Happy CHICKEN instead of Turkey day to all (I'm not a fan of Turkey, chicken has more flavor ;-)) Left the comp running while I slept, all stayed well. Screensaver activated nothing froze. I removed transmission and installed VuZe it seemed so much more stable while downloading until I began downloading Snow Leopard @ 3 Mbit.. it froze up about 10 minutes into it every-time. Gamer R3D
All is well with this Kalywa install with 2 exceptions: USB does not recognize external harddrives and iPhone but, sees HP printer in addition to being able to download printer drivers via apple updates. And, the system also freezes up randomly-It may run for hours perfectly but at other times a random system wide freeze can occur. It can be a little pain if you're in the middle of something but, Leopard boots pretty damn quick considering its a hack, faster than 7 :-/, so such can be over looked considering its running on amd and nvidia sub systems. Again any help to these issues would be greatfull. In addition: I got the dual boot things fixed, none of those suggestions out there work for me. I simply wiped both drives installed 7 on the first one and X on the other. The system boots naively into 7 every-time. However, on my asus board "F8" launces the boot menu to select the second HD with Leopard (screw all that Easy bsd and chain 0 mess) Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/199573-sucessful-kalyway-install/#findComment-1346045 Share on other sites
Gamer R3D
Thanks for the reply. I doubt port forwarding will help, is seems to occur as a result of the information being written to the X partition; as also mentioned it has happened while downloading via Safari also. I assume this although system-wide lockup's do randomly occur because I can pretty much brace myself for one while initiating a download. Aside form it being random, I am almost assured a longer span of stability when I leave downloading out of the loop. For now I created a swap folder on windows 7, I will dump .DMG files there and transfer to X when ever I boot into it for use. So far, not being a fan of X, but having used it before I understand at least why their users enjoy it. It's so stripped down of options that you couldn't possibly feel overwhelmed (not that I overwhelmed with windows, I prefer the open-ended approach and options for every little thing-which for functionally is besides the point) But, then again, being a Linux user also, its virtually the same bed different sheet. Either way, I would like to move to Snow, but at the moment don't see a solution for my trusty K8 and nVIDIA chipset. However, I'm looking into what is available for the i7/X58 platform I'm, curious to see what happens on a 4GHZ platform with high frequency memory 2000mhz (plus) Until then I'm researching my next OSX86 test before I waste away DVD's on the many distros out there. My I ask what Distro you, or are using on your Optiplex? Addition: I've used up all the kernals on the Kalyway build, and only the default intel/amd kernel works... I'm guess this is the best I'll get out of this setup, tried a few other-iDeneb, iPC universal... and some others. Still trying to Tweak this beast because I have no use for a duel boot, one OS does everything for me as long as I have enough harddrives. But I wouldn't mind having this machine a bit more stable as a second comp. My i7 needs more than this so other than seeing what it can do it won't be dedicated to that system. Does anyone agree with using a micro atx or mini itx with a core 2 or something.... could get one set up for less than $150, the intel boards are actuall a bit more expensive, so under 200 is more like it. What do you guys think about those hardware options? Gamer R3D
I see... 1.) I have read of many methods with the retail install, which did you use? Did you do a straight upgrade from iPC or use the EFI method within iPC to another drive? 2.) I have the seat belt ktext installed; It's not a DMG issue I can install programs excellently. The reason for the swap folder is to prevent the hassle of downloading via X, I can manage all my downloads in one place and "import" it to X via access to the windows drive via X-since getting a system wide lock up randomly doesn't help a download. I have however had successful downloads via transmission and more so VuZe. 3.) The "stripped down" comment :-) ... I cleared that up when I made the Linux comment after. Gamer R3D
Gotch! And thank you... In all my research, and I just finished reading the nfo that came with EMPIRE EFI, it seems that a intel *DUH* based solution is best-best although I've seen some flawlessly working AMD systems, but most seems to be AM2 and onward. Don't see any of the older systems anymore. Can't say for sure if it makes a world of a difference I haven't read or heard otherwise.... I was really trying to put the K8 to use but it seems I will be forced to do otherwise. In the comming weeks I will begin reporting on my i7 experiences. Gamer R3D
Okay, tired reading, I don't think there is anything else I can learn till I actually do this. I usually like to be fully prepared before hand hence the reading. There is a guy over on youtube with a system similar to mine: EVGA X58 SLI LE, i7 920, and we use different memory I use 2000mhz HyperX-6GB. Not sure of his procedure but he's somewhere in this forum; and might I add has put together a hell of a hackingtosh; he calls it "King Hackingtosh", and I bow... lol I just got the latest EMPIRE EFI 1.08 from over at prasys blog. I searched torrents and found nothing current, not even on the bay. So if you are looking for it prasys blog is a direct link to the latest version. Picked up a copy of Snow (10A432): the bloody thing downloaded in less half an hour. Switched to my Kalyway install and copied Snow over from my Win 7 drive. Now keeping in mind that I could have a freeze up, I pretty much put the .DMG through the same paces I would with an ISO in windows. The transfer was smooth :-) no freeze, verification of the image in OSX on executing the .DMG went well :-), finder mounting the .DMG, went well also :-). Next I ran disk utility->Burn->point to image and... wait for it..... I got to get some more Duel layed disks for the burn lol. Now this is the first step of my i7 install, as I begin things I will report back with detailed info. Need those DL disks, and got to build up the boredom to back up 7 for the new install. My only concern at this step is creating a bootable Snow as many folks seem to be having problems burning the dmg. I did consider using trusty Power ISO over in 7 since it naively supports .dmg format but DL disks aren't the cheapest to be throwing around carelessly, so I opted to at least put some faith into my Kalyway install. As long as there is no lockup during the burn phase I'll be on my way. If push comes to shove though I will use PowerISO. After all it is supposed to be able to do the job, and is one of the best burning software out there. I just don't understand why people are having so much problems. But in my experience reading through forums-the are tons of noobs who don't have a clue. Half of the problems that gets complained about I never had. But, anyway... PowerISO will be another little project I will report on for those who would like to burn in windows-I'll get extra DL disks just to test that. Also if you have had positive results with dmg's in PowerISO please feel free to let us know that it is a effective measure. because reading around I only see the complaints aside from those who own a mac and burn from there. And as I mentioned that, a thought just came to mind, wouldn't Linux be able to do this also? Addition: Well I'm back for the new year. First thing I did on the new i7 build was test out PowerISO, and to confirm what some and I have been unsure about the news is it works beautifuly. No longer do you need a mac or OSX to burn a dmg image that 'works' I downloaded Snow and purned it the same way I do Windows slow and all six + gigs burned flawlessly. Now to the retail install. I haven't really put much effort into it as of yet because I'm still overclocking. But I did test out Empire and got as far as 15 min of installation left and then a failed to install error. Not sure what that is about but I havent been paying too much attention to X lately. Sometime in the next few weeks or so I plan on giving DD info a look up to seek out some more and flawless success. I also havent put Kalyway to the test just as yet on the X58 system, but will also in the coming weeks.
