Disk Utility Restore Problem

(I may be a noobie, but I'm a dedicated convert.) I'm running 10.5 on my Acer D150 and loving it. While trying to get Time Machine to work I messed up some file and cannot repair permissions. I'm getting error msgs like "Empty path in "com.apple.repair -permissions.pkg-group" receipt.

Cannot run apple installer. I would like to restore the system back to my system backup on (proven) bootable flash key. On the restore screen I can select my source 'boot backup flash key' but on destination I cannot select "Macintosh HD". Any suggestions.... I've given up on TM and will just backup when required.

(BTW tried to use your fix IONetworkingFamily.Kext and definitely created more problems)
