Hey everyone,

So I'm completely new to this OSX86 scene and I need some help trying to figure out what is what. I'm not computer illiterate, and I've done my fair share of partitioning, multi-booting, and almost everything else you can think of.

Anyways, I've spent...more hours than I care to remember trying to figure out information on how to install OS X. I have a .dmg file of the retail OS X dvd, and I also have a .ISO format floating around somewhere. My friend passed along his Kalyway dvd to me since he got it working on his Netbook (MSI with an intel atom processor), but it hasn't worked for me on my desktop or my new laptop.

Here are my system specs, so please let me know what I can do to get this working! Its not 100% crucial that I actually install OS X, since i"m more than happy with Fedora + XP or Fedora + Win7 boot, but it'd be cool to have, just to have it.

Pretty sure that covers everything. My gfx card is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530, too.

I'm sorry if this thread is just one of a million that is "omg help me i'm a noob", but I've spent lots of time searching, and I only post as a last resort. I really hope that installing isn't as much trouble at its coming out to be, with with all the drivers and kext files and whatnot to install, but we'll just wait and see.

Thanks for any help,

Did you already try installing it?

Thanks for your reply. I have not been able to install it yet, no. I have...quite a few images, ranging from 4-7gb and I'm trying to FIRST try them in a virtual machine (I have both VMWare and Sun VirtualBox) but it keeps saying FATAL: No bootable media found. System Halted.

My reason for posting is to know if my hardware is even compatible with OS X 86, and if so maybe I can get some advice on the first steps to take, what boot disc to use (I have both Boot 132 and one or two Kalyway discs). Also, I want to make a note that I HAVE read through all the HCL lists for OS X 86 but obviously different people have different computers with different hardware, so my stuff isnt listed on there.

I am hoping to successfully install OSX with the help of the wonderful users of this forum, and then post a relevent guide as to what I did.

Hope to see a response soon,

Killa

Just a note: I have a VMWare virtual machine file thing, that DOES work but that would only allow me to run OSX from a virtual machine, not an actual OS that I can boot into. Does anyone know how I can maybe extract the image from that VMWare file? (The one I downloaded was only 2 gb, but when I extracted it, the actual image is over 7 gigs.)

ISO or a real DVD?

See if this has anything:

I have the DVD for Kalyway, ISO's for the rest of the stuff...my friend who has a mac also loaned me his dvd's but I think they are only for that specific computer, since it says Macbook Pro Recovery Discs on the front.

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page<---I've visited that site plenty of times and like I said, I've checked everywhere. All the forum posts and stuff are so hardware-specific, I need something general to help me take the first steps, and a PROPER procedure to follow

That VMWare website link you posted says something about temporary maintenance, so I will check back later.

Also, in threads like this: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=179654 they will have a pic like this showing what it has:

What happens if you try to boot any of the DVDs? (Except for the Macbook ones because those won't work.)

So my initial success tells me that it was a problem with the .ISO files I was using. I "acquired" a Kalyway image, mounted it on a virtual drive, played it in VMWare player, and its installing as we speak. Hopefully this success will translate over just fine when I actually burn the image.

The other files I tried were the actual image of the retail disc, and the iDeneb disc, neither which worked. I will post my results later, and hopefully I can make a guide that caters to this specific computer so I have something to reference in the future, as well as to help other users who might encounter the same problems.

Thanks for the help Newuser1111
