Hi everyone, I am a hackintosh newbie, but I have been playing around for around a month now. Here's my report on Snow Leopard on Asus P5kPL/1600 mobo. Feel free to skip some of the "boring parts" as this could be a long post.

Thanks and Goal:

Firstly, thanks for the great resources here and I have got snow leopard working (almost 100% but I am already happy about it). Secondly, I hope to provide my "report and findings" and some questions, hopefully it would help others and also help me perfecting my build. More importantly, as a newbie myself, I don't want to give misleading information. My goal is just to share what I experimented.

The Story:

I originally had p5kpl/1600 mobo, experimented and played around with Leopard, the experience told me that I needed a good amount of time and LOTS of testing if I wanted to install Snow to a non-tested mobo. So...done some quick research, I decided to buy Asus p5ql pro in hope I didn't have to spend so much time making it work, so I thought it would spend the money to save time, but I was wrong :(

P5ql Pro goes down the drain:

So...bought the p5ql pro board, installed it. Downloaded Juzzi's Bios rom and flashed my bios. Follow the instructions from various p5ql tutorials to get the AHCI, ACIP 2, etc... Installed Snow Leopard....unexpectedly, Sleep/Wake didn't work as from the research I gathered, the mobo should really work OOB. Tried SleepEnabler.kext, it can sleep but affected my restart/shutdown, I also noticed the mouse movement is not quite smooth for some reasons (I thought it was due to system not being compatible or not stable or whatever reasons). Anyway, lots of reinstall and trying different combinations....one day, I pressed sleep to test it, the mobo hangs up and when I restart the computer, it boots a little while and then it will shut down, then it goes back up, just repeating like that. Won't even boot into bios. Therefore I don't know how to fix it and it's painful to see my money goes down the drain :(

If anyone knows how to fix this, greatly appreciate it.

P5kl/1600:

Now this mobo is quite interesting, to me at least. Many guides have said Snow Leopard needed to be installed on SATA, cannot be on IDE (please correct me if I am wrong). Strangely, I can install SL onto IDE drive as well as SATA drive. I haven't gone deeply testing to how stable the SL is on IDE, but I have installed SL on my IDE previously, played around for only a little while.

Anyway, here is the steps I took to install SL on my SATA drive. (SATA1):

I basically followed this guide:

http://www.i h a c k i n t o s h.com/2009/08/how-to-install-snow-leopard-10a432-on-pc-hackintosh/

(for some reasons, this link kept autmoatically replaced with insanelymac, so I have to link it like this)

1. I used iPC OSx86 10.5.6 and installed onto my USB drive.

2. Bios -> boot from this USB drive -> and booted into Leopard.

3. In Leopard, formatted my SATA drive to 2 partitions (1. snow install 2. Snow Leopard) GUID

(Ignore Ownership on the volume is already unchecked, strangely)

4. restored SL installation img to "snow install" partition".

5. from snow install -> install SL to Snow Leopard partition.

5a. Opened Disk Utility: Highlighted Snow Leopard -> click Info and copied the Universal Unique Identifier

5b. PlatformUUID.kext -> show package contents -> info.plist -> placed this Identifier number inside.

5c. Placed this number also in the smbios.plist.

6. I used Chameleon 2.0 RC2-r640 and installed (with themes) onto SL.

7. Replace SL boot file with Chameleon RC3 boot file. (I will test with this boot file later

8. Copy 7 kexts to extra/extensions folder:

AppleACPIPS2Nub + ApplePS2Controller -> for my ps2 keyboard

AppleRTC -> i think this is a fix for cmos reset?

fakesmc, NullCPUPowerManagement, OpenHaltRestart, PlatformUUID

9. the rest is same as the guide in insanelymac: Used KextUtitlity to generate mkext, used DSDTPatcherGUI1.0 to applied DSDT to SL, replaced com.apple.boot.plist and smbios.

10. 1st boot to SL, I used -f -v arch=i386, dunno whether -f is necessary tho

11. After booted in Snow, used KextHelper to install VooDooHDA to get audio.

Results:

Network card works

- auto detected.

Audio works

- VooDooHDA, but there are some "error" msg in Kernel log, i will try to patch DSDT (if I can do it :) )

Video works

- used OSx86Tools to generate hex code in placed it in com.apple.boot.plist. Visual tested with Prasy's method

32bit / 64bit seems ok.

- seems stable (from user experience perspective) However, when booted in 64bit, when I checked the console all msg:

com.apple.dumpPanic[50] DumpPanic[50:107] Error getting a reference to IODeviceTree:/options.

This doesn't appear in verbose mode. SL still loads and runs fine, I just have no idea what impact it has.

Drive(s) Access seems ok.

- I can access all hard drives from SL both in 32bit/64bit -> IDE and SATA.

Sleep / Wake

- not working, I haven't really gone to fix this yet. (I am scared to test this too much after the p5qlPro board incident :) )

findings and questions:

CPU temperature:

With flashed Bios P5qlPro mobo, I noticed the CPU temperature on avg. is around 44'C. This scares me a bit. In p5kpl/1600, the CPU on avg is only 30-31'C.

Blue screen when changing resolutions:

It was very interesting and quite frustrating when I got blue screen freeze after changing resolution. Later on I found out it was as simple as changing the connection to the other output on my video card. :P

Bootloader resolution:

I am using Benq E2200HD now at 1920 x 1080, my video card has 2 DVI outputs. If I use DVI connectors, there's always a black border around Chameleon GUI screen and the apple loading screen, initally i thought this was another problem i have to fix, but I found out it's just the way it is due to VESA? If I use DVI-VGA connectors, I can have full screen resolution during boot screens, but I can see that DVI output has a sharper graphics, so I stick with DVI.

Other things

1. If the p5ql pro and this p5kpl/1600 board didn't give me sleep/wake, I would assumed it's either: my bios settings weren't right OR it's my other hardware (in this case. it would be my video card but it's strange that video card would cause sleep/wake not working?)

2.

DumpPanic[50:107] Error getting a reference to IODeviceTree:/options

Is this a problem? I only see this in my console, not during the verbose mode loading screen. And it only appears in 64bit mode.

3.

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - waitForService(resourceMatching(AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out

I have this in Kernel log, SL loads fine tho, is this msg a common thing or is it a problem I have to fix? If so, how?

4. I am thinking to try and patch DSDT to fix audio so I can use AppleHDA rather than VooDooHDA, but the first step I would like to know is, What's the difference between a dsdt generated from DSDTPatcherGUIv1.0 vs the other dsdt patching posts?

5. Is there any "standard" kernel log or something that we can check against to know whether our hackintosh is running fine and smoothly? Coz when I checked my console, there are lots of msg that may sound like problems due to technical jargons but from a non-programming person's point of view, it's difficult to know.

Overall:

I am quite happy it's running quite smooth (at least from a user experience perspective). The other thing I didn't like was the mouse movement doesn't seem to be as smooth as Windows, especially when trying to close a window. The close button is smaller than the ones in Windows PLUS the mouse movement wasn't very smooth, so this makes the experience not nice.

The other BIG pain was of course my p5QL pro board. What a waste of money!!!!! Other than that, I am quite happy as the system seems ok, even though sleep/wake doesn't work, I am not too fuss about it (well, at least for now, I am scared the same thing might happen and I don't want to spend more money), my solution for now is to turn off the computer if I know I will be away for a while :P .
