Sean McCarthy
Hi all, I currently dual boot Vista and Linux, and am attempting to add Leopard via iPC 10.5.6. I use GPartEd to format the 180GB of unallocated space on my drive as FAT32, then reboot with the iPC DVD. The OS X installer loads fine. I open the Disc Utility and try to erase the FAT32 partition and make it "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". It acts like it is erasing, but doesn't actually do anything. The partition still shows up as FAT32, and does not show up as an install location if I try to continue on. I have burned the iso DVD numerous times, at the slowest rate to ensure a good disc. Any thoughts as to what might be causing this? Am I doing something wrong? I realize I'm a little behind on this (not using Snow Leopard or Windows 7), but I'm hoping some of you people who are way smarter than I can lend me a hand and get my triple boot up and running. Thanks! Sean Link to comment https://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/191568-disc-utility-not-formatting-hfs/ Share on other sites
srs5694
See my reply to this post: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=191588 Since you've already got a working Linux installation, you should be able to prepare the disk using mkfs.hfsplus without booting an emergency disc, but you may need to install an HFS+ utilities package. Try using whatever network-enabled package management tool you've got (such as Synaptic for Debian or Ubuntu, Yumex for Fedora, YaST2 for SUSE, etc.) to locate an appropriate package. Sean McCarthy
Rod, thanks for your reply. First I tried just using the mkfs.hfsplus command to make my partition (/dev/sda4) into an HFS+ partition. It confirms that it has initialized the drive as HFS+. When I reboot and retry the OSX install, it still shows the partition as FAT32. However, if I go back into Linux and open GpartEd, it says HFS+... So then I used fdisk and entered the "t" command, but I'm not sure which code to use. It's not obvious to me that there is a correct format available. This is what I get when I enter "t"... 0 Empty 1e Hidden W95 FAT1 80 Old Minix bf Solaris 1 FAT12 24 NEC DOS 81 Minix / old Lin c1 DRDOS/sec (FAT- 2 XENIX root 39 Plan 9 82 Linux swap / So c4 DRDOS/sec (FAT- 3 XENIX usr 3c PartitionMagic 83 Linux c6 DRDOS/sec (FAT- 4 FAT16 <32M 40 Venix 80286 84 OS/2 hidden C: c7 Syrinx 5 Extended 41 PPC PReP Boot 85 Linux extended da Non-FS data 6 FAT16 42 SFS 86 NTFS volume set db CP/M / CTOS / . 7 HPFS/NTFS 4d QNX4.x 87 NTFS volume set de Dell Utility 8 AIX 4e QNX4.x 2nd part 88 Linux plaintext df BootIt 9 AIX bootable 4f QNX4.x 3rd part 8e Linux LVM e1 DOS access a OS/2 Boot Manag 50 OnTrack DM 93 Amoeba e3 DOS R/O b W95 FAT32 51 OnTrack DM6 Aux 94 Amoeba BBT e4 SpeedStor c W95 FAT32 (LBA) 52 CP/M 9f BSD/OS eb BeOS fs e W95 FAT16 (LBA) 53 OnTrack DM6 Aux a0 IBM Thinkpad hi ee GPT f W95 Ext'd (LBA) 54 OnTrackDM6 a5 FreeBSD ef EFI (FAT-12/16/ 10 OPUS 55 EZ-Drive a6 OpenBSD f0 Linux/PA-RISC b 11 Hidden FAT12 56 Golden Bow a7 NeXTSTEP f1 SpeedStor 12 Compaq diagnost 5c Priam Edisk a8 Darwin UFS f4 SpeedStor 14 Hidden FAT16 <3 61 SpeedStor a9 NetBSD f2 DOS secondary 16 Hidden FAT16 63 GNU HURD or Sys ab Darwin boot fb VMware VMFS 17 Hidden HPFS/NTF 64 Novell Netware b7 BSDI fs fc VMware VMKCORE 18 AST SmartSleep 65 Novell Netware b8 BSDI swap fd Linux raid auto 1b Hidden W95 FAT3 70 DiskSecure Mult bb Boot Wizard hid fe LANstep 1c Hidden W95 FAT3 75 PC/IX be Solaris boot ff BBT Any thoughts as to what I should select? srs5694
The code is 0xAF. (You normally omit the "0x" part when entering the code, though; that's computer-speak to indicate a hexadecimal, or base-16, number.) Sean McCarthy
Rod, thank you! It boggles my mind how much people on forums like this know about the inner workings of computers. Problem formatting was solved and OS X installed within minutes. I did have to restore GRUB and add OS X to it, but now I can boot into all 3 OS's. Now to do even more digging to iron out the kinks -- Leopard isn't recognizing my laptop's keyboard, pointer, or Wireless card. But the biggest hurdle has been cleared, thanks again!
